Meeting the Shop Owner

Author note:
Writing this chapter made me realize how much I had already missed writing Rhonda.

So of course this chapter focuses on someone else...

The car drive to… wherever that magic shop was, was uncomfortably tense. Sofia, in particular, just sat in the backseat casting something while only giving occasional directional inputs. It was fairly obvious to Emma and Millie that their two passengers had some kind of history with that shop, but neither dared asking due to Sofia's aura of ‘I really do NOT want to talk about this now’ and Rhonda's aura of ‘I really don't want to talk about this while my best friend here is in punching range’. Under Sofia's directions they drove to the nearest mall and were then led by the light of Sofia's wand to a mysterious door in a part that Emma thought was a dead end.

“Has this door always been there?” she asked.

“It's a magical door that will directly teleport us to the magic shop. Each shop has them spread around the world for easy access. The particular one we’re going to is located in Germany. They're also enchanted so people, who have no business there can't see them.” Sofia explained as she put her hand on the doorknob. “And remember, don't touch anything in there and leave the talking to me!”

Opening the door enveloped the group of four in a bright light. When they were able to see again, they found themselves right in the middle of several shelves filled with magical artifacts. Sofia immediately walked forward with a determined gait deeper into the store. Right past several more rows of magic knickknacks and potions, they finally reached what looked like a service area with a voluptuous woman sleeping right on a desk.

Sofia made an exasperated groan before taking out her wand… and roughly poking the woman with it. “Wake up!”

The woman startled awake. “Ich bin wach! Ich bin wach!” After dazedly looking around for a few moments, she focused on her guests, some drool still running down her chin. “Huh… Sofia… and Rhonda… and customers! Oh shit.” With a flick of her own wand she straightened her own appearance, though the heavy bags under her eyes persisted. “What can I do for my favorite niece and her friends?” she asked with a heavy german accent.

“Niece?!” Both Millie and Emma exclaimed.

Sofia sighed. “Emma, Millie, meet Adelheid Schlangenauge, the owner of this magic shop…” She sighed again. “...and my aunt…”

Now that she mentioned it, they could see the familial resemblance between the two. The long, blonde hair and similar facial features were pretty obvious, even if Adelheid’s eyes seemed to never actually open. It wasn't very hard to see her as how Sofia would look once she became an adult. Or rather when she'd just passed her best years, to be a bit more specific.

“I’m also her godmother,” Adelheid added. “Do you have to act so cold against me? I remember you enjoying playing around in the shop of your ‘Aunty Adie’ when you were younger.”

“Yeah, that was before I realized what you do when not manning this store,” Sofia replied harshly.

Adelheid didn’t seem to take the accusation well. “I’ll have you know that everything I do is for the betterment of either our family or this shop. I’m a hardworking woman.”

“Yeah, you’re working yourself to total exhaustion as we could see.”

“I just returned from an important business trip and am still suffering from jetlag.” Then she slightly turned her head away. “And admittedly there haven’t been any customers today.”

Before Sofia could fire another retort, Rhonda placed themselves between them. “This might actually tie into why we’re here.” She gave Adelheid her phone, which already had the news app open.

Adelheid took the phone and started reading the article. With each scroll she did, her eyes grew wider. “Holy shit… Holy shit!... Heilige Scheisse!... Okay, this is a problem.”

She takes a closer ‘look’ at the group. “I can see it in your essences, you’ve all been affected as well.” Adelheid sighed. “And here I thought our family’s genes had finally come through in Sofia.”

“Who said I ever wanted a back pain-inducing rack like yours?” Sofia snapped, but her chest-issues went ignored.

“Though I have to admit, you did a great job on the asexuality-curse. One mistake could have ruined your love life forever.”

As Sofia grumbled out a silent “Thank you”, Rhonda couldn't help but ask. “Can you maybe also tell us why we aren't as lust-crazy as the others?”

“It's simple. These two,” The older witch pointed at Emma and Millie. “Are already under the effect of the strongest curse out there.” Pause for dramatic effect. “True Love.” Everyone released a breath they’d been unnecessarily holding. “The love you two feel for each other is more than enough to fill the lust requirement to keep up your transformation. It probably made you two even closer. Heh, wouldn't be surprised if you two can't even sleep in separate rooms anymore.”

Emma and Millie blushed at this reveal. They definitely would have to talk about this once everything else was dealt with. For now they were fine with just stealing glances at each other.

“And what about me?” Rhonda asked.

“To be honest, I’m not sure. At first glance I really can't see anything about you that could make a difference. You might just be an anomaly,” Adelheid admitted. Then she slightly opened one of her eyes and focused the latina with a snake-like stare. “Of course, if you allow it, I could cut you open and look in much more detail.”

Rhonda gulped. Sofia's aunt always made these jokes about dissecting her for some reason. Even odder was that Rhonda was the only person she did that with, but the girl was too afraid to dare and ask why… or if those really were only jokes.

“Anyways, let's put the jokes aside, you probably want my help in finding whoever sold Essence of the Sea to a random idiot,” the shop’s owner deduced.

“Almost,” Sofia replied as she fished the bottle out of her pocket. “Because we already know the merchant, you!”

Adelheid took the bottle and carefully examined it from all sides. “Yes, unfortunately this is one of our bottles.”

“So you admit it?!”

“I think I already mentioned I spent the last few weeks on business travels. I wasn't here, ergo I couldn't have sold it.”

Sofia barely held back a curse. “Then just tell us, who was manning the shop while you were gone.”
