Marcia decided to stay where she was. Her reasoning was twofold. First, she didn’t want someone to see her sucking her thumb in a wet diaper. The second, secret reason was that she was too scared to try to investigate. There was another creak. Marcia sucked on her thumb even more urgently, craving comfort. She could feel herself beginning to calm down somewhat when a door slammed somewhere. Unable to control herself, she let out a loud wail of despair.
Then, footsteps sounded. Marcia sobbed, terrified to the point of wetting herself again. The footsteps approached the crib. Her protective blanket was lifted, revealing Christine.
“I told you I’d be back,” Christine said. Losing her mind from fear, Marcia wailed again. She reached her arms out. “Aw, it’s okay, Marcia,” Christine cooed, lifting Marcia from the crib. She squeezed Marcia’s diaper. “Oh, someone needs a change. Don’t worry, I’ll take care of that right now.”
Christine brought Marcia over to the changing table, where she removed Marcia’s cloth diaper, wiped her down, and then pinned a fresh one on.
“There,” Christine said cheerfully. She picked Marcia up again. “The library has been warded against the supernatural, it’s the only truly safe place in the mansion. Rusty will meet us there once he’s done, and then we can discuss where we go from here.” Christine packed a bag with more diapers and changing supplies, as well as a change of clothes for Marcia. Then, carrying the diaper bag and Marcia, she exited the nursery.
“We go liberry?” Marcia asked timidly.
“Yes, we go library,” Christine cooed. “I’m glad you’ve calmed down a bit.”
“Me too. I’m adult,” Marcia said. Her thumb found its way back to her mouth. She sucked on it happily as they made their way to the library.
