Marcia was determined not to make a complete fool of herself, so she carefully lifted the front of the blanket and peered out. To some level of relief, she saw a creature emerge from the shadows. That relief would be offset by the danger she was in.
A strange mixture of man and reindeer with glowing red eyes, the creature peered around the room. Marcia gulped as she realized what it was. She'd heard of Inuit legends of a creature like this, a shapeshifter known as a an ijiraq. They were known to kidnap and abandon children. But what was it doing this far south? Marcia had never heard of one being seen outside of arctic tundras.
Her thoughts were cut short as the creature shifted its gaze her way. She dropped the blanket back over her face and held her breath. Explanations could wait. Right now she had the body of a child and was in the presence of a child stealing monster.
If it took her, who knows where she would end up? She shivered, but how was she going to avoid that? Keep trying to hide? Escape the crib and try to reach her bag or go for the door?
