Emily awoke to a bright light shining directly into her face, recognizing it as one of those mounted lights you might see at a doctor or dentist's office. She realized that she was in a reclining position, resting on top of a stiff raised platform covered in thin disposable sheets.
As Emily frantically glanced around the room, spotting surgical implements and machinery as well as posters and diagrams of a medical nature, a masked face came into her view. A doctor of some kind, in pale blue scrubs.
"Now now, calm down, Mrs. Saunders. I know needles can be scary, but our nurse is an experienced anesthesiologist. One of the best."
Emily only managed to get out a slurred "Wha? What's happennn..." as she tilted her head to the left and saw a kindly looking woman injecting her with something.
A warm tingle washed over Emily's entire body, and as her muscles relaxed and her body began to feel like it was melting into the hospital bed, she saw the doctor weighing a pair of massive, clear blobs in his hands. It was the last thing she saw as her vision blurred, darkened, and finally went black.
An unknown time passed as Emily experienced a dreamless, drug-induced sleep.
Eventually she began to stir, her vision still dark and her body feeling like it was made of lead. She felt a heavy weight on her chest, or rather two weights, and a searing pain around her ribs, like a fresh scrape.
Her vision returned much more slowly than her other senses, and through a dark fog she peered down at herself, struggling to crane her stiff neck. She was shocked at what she saw.
