The shoe store is never where or when one expects it to be. But it is always in the right place. It's not really a shoe store either, shoes are just the way the magic works. People will find it when they need it, and they will always find what they need.
A customer walks into the store, the sole attendant behind the counter giving them a warm smile. "Welcome to Walk a Mile Shoes."
The customer looks around bewildered. The store is filled with all sorts of footwear. Some looking almost brand new, others worn in and scuffed. "Used shoes?" They ask, sounding skeptical.
"Shoes keep the experiences of their owners. Where they've been, who they were. You can learn a lot walking in another person's shoes." The clerk smiles brightly."
"Really?" The customer doesn't seem convinced, but starts looking through the shoes anyway.
The clerk follows, "The rules are simple, you may try on any pair of shoes and live the next twenty-four hours as the previous owner of those shoes. When your time is up you will find yourself back here right after you put the shoes on, no time having passed. You may either try on another pair of shoes or keep the ones you have if you decide they're for you."
"Really?" The customer asks again, picking up a hiking boot and looking it over before returning it to the shelf. "A new life, just like that? Free of charge?"
"Well. No one finds themselves here unless they are looking for a change. And it's not free. The cost is your own shoes to replace the ones you keep." The clerk folds his hands in front of him, still smiling pleasantly. "You may not want them anymore. Not every pair of shoes is for everyone, just as not every life is for everyone. But people want and need different things. There's a pair of shoes in here for everyone. I've never lost a sale. What does it hurt to try?"
