Inside the ambulance the wail of the siren was almost deafening forcing Doctor Small to shout orders at Nurse Stripes. “I need an IV with one liter of classic black paint for the older adult male patient,and let’s get the paddles warmed up for immediate use on the young ursine patient, stat!” Doctor Small took then grabbed what appeared to be two oxygen masks, each with clear plastic tubes snaking back into ports on the ambulance’s sidewall. As the zebra nurse busied herself with her assigned tasks the hippopotamus doctor smacked the masks on the still restrained and very alarmed James and Kelly with a loud “PLOP.” The teens' alarm turned to panic as they watched the doctor pull down on a lever sticking out near James’s head. It was labeled “Giggle Gas” and she'd adjusted it to the 50% setting. Turning to Kelly, the Doctor gave a different lever above the girl's head marked “Silly Suction” a firm yank also until it rested at the 25% setting.
With a hiss the Giggle Gas started flooding into James’s mask and the panicked butterflies fluttering around James’s innards were pushed aside by a pleasant gassy fullness that overtook his stomach. What was he worried about in the first place anyhow? After all, James told himself, Doctor Small was a professional and she no doubt knew exactly what she was doing. The gas continued to flow into his lungs and stomach and looking down the length of the stretcher James swore he could see his legs starting to unevenly pulse with gas bubbles, the round bulges migrating quickly toward his large furry feet.
The teen began to moan through the mask covering his nose and mouth as a pleasant tingling started at the very tips of his three-toed feetpaws. Mistaking James’s moans of pleasure for pain, Cheryl tried to ask the toon doctor to stop but was quickly hushed by Nurse Stripes who tipped down her throat a dixie cup of three orange pills that tasted vaguely of carrots. “He’ll be fine my little bunbun, Doctor Small knows precisely what she’s doing,” consoled the nurse. The pills made Cheryl feel woozy and she started to get an odd sensation in her two front semi-buckteeth and above her upper lip. But Cheryl’s focus was pulled back to James as she observed what was now happening to her classmate. The girl's eyes widened in horror as she realized the Giggle Gas was filling James’s body like a balloon, causing his tummy and already big paw-like feet to pulse and grow. The strapped-down teen boy could only wiggle his fuzzy toes and moan as the arches of his feet lengthened inch-by-inch while grey ink and paint fur covered the remaining patches of skin.
Doctor Small was watching the process but seemed dissatisfied. “Let’s see if we can speed things along here a bit” she exclaimed, removing an oversize toon mallet that had been secured to a tool rack inside of the ambulance door. “Wait, don’t!” shouted Cheryl as the hippo doctor brought the mallet down onto James’s bulging stomach. The gas in his belly was instantly pushed down his legs and into the teen boy’s feetpaws which stretched to freakish proportions as if they were going to pop before returning to their more "normal" appearance, although it was obvious that they'd permanently swollen to an even larger size than before. “A silly squirrelboy like you needs some nice big stompers” counseled the doctor, before whacking James again and making his furry toes grow to the size of tennis balls. “And one more for good luck!” cried Doctor Small as she wound up the toon mallet and gave James’s belly a final good blow, causing the boy’s feet to swell to their full cartoon proportions as a cluster of pink pawpads popped into existence on the bottoms of his fuzzy soles. Cheryl surprised herself with the twinge of jealousy she felt upon realizing that James’s pawfeet now far surpassed her own in both length and general furriness.
