The zoo had just renovated the primate section, moving to a more open set of habitats, separated from the public by zoo mesh. It allowed the visitors to much more safely get closer to the primates.
One of the first groups into the primate section that day was Sheila Easton, a forty year old single mother, who was trying to make a nice outing for her two children, but neither were having it. Thirteeen year old Lauren was looking at her phone, and eight year old Ben thought monkeys were stupid and wanted to go see something with claws.
"Can't we just have a nice day out, without either or you complaining?" The poor put upon mother asked them.
"Why'd we have to come to the zoo anyway?" Lauren asked. "I mean, it's so lame."
"Yeah," Ben said. "I mean...they aren't even doing anything interesting," he said.
"Fine...we'll go look at something else," she said, moving along the path alongside a habitat. She'd thought they were chimps...but the sign said bonobos. Sheila thought for a moment about telling her children that, but they seemed rather...disinterested.
There were three bonobos in the habitat, at least that she could see. As they moved, the three seemed to follow them, or follow the line of the barrier between them. It was starting to creep her out a bit.
They turned to the right, and suddenly noticed several trees in their path. Turning around, they saw the pavement...through the mesh.
