You show up at the address later that day, a poor young man fresh out of high school with little career aspects. Any chance to earn some fast cash is just fine by your standards. You check the ad and confirm that you are at the right place, and you look up again to see a large sign over the building that reads "Connor Pharmaceuticals." You put the ad in your pocket and step up to the sliding glass doors and into a small reception area. There is nobody else here but a pretty freckled redhead sitting at a large circular desk filing her nails. Must be the receptionist.
You walk up to the desk and pull the ad from your pocket again. "Hi!" you say cheerfully, "I’m here for the medical research." The receptionist looks at you doubtfully and sighs. "Of course you are." She points to a door at the back of the room and goes back to her nails. You mutter, "uh, thanks" as you walk past her and head towards the door. It opens up into a long white hallway that reminds you of a hospital ward. There are what appear to be laboratory workers buzzing around complete with clipboards and white coats.
Nobody seems to notice you, so you stand at the doorway for a few seconds before growing impatient and walking down the hall until you get somebody’s attention. A plain looking blonde with thick-rimmed glasses and her hair in a bun finally notices you. She asks if you’re here for the advert in the paper, speaking with a light British accent. You nod yes, and she beckons you to follow her.
The woman leads you to a room filled with complicated computers and mind-boggling equipment of unknown purpose. The centerpiece of the room is a large glass cylinder with a metallic grid of sorts set inside on both the ceiling and floor. The woman identifies herself as Dr. Victoria Hurley, a name you have read about recently in the newspaper. She had won a Nobel Prize for her advancements in curing cancer, hadn’t she? Dr. Hurley gives you some forms to fill out and says she will return in a fifteen minutes or so, as she has some work to tend to. She invites you to have a drink from the water cooler in the corner of the room.
You finish the forms quickly and look around the room. The machinery is really very impressive, and you wonder what it’s for.
