The sound of a beep now drew Calebs attention. Turning from Jim the 17 year old hunter now anxiously gazed at his computer.
"What are you doing," Jim asked.
"Playing a hunch," Caleb replied. "I did a bit of exploring earlier. Actually found one of these wizards. Was able to get her name and some information before I blanked her mind." A smile now spread across his face as he began to gather his things.
"Found out where this girl lives," he said, as he grabbed his cowboy hat. "Her names Naomi Tozawa. She said something about demons and something called a kitsune. Figured I'd scout the place out."
"That is all sorts of a bad idea," Jim countered. "Your dad is already on it. Plus I wouldn't go messing with demons and kitsunes."
"Dont worry I got this."
"Thats what I'm afraid of."
Despite Jim's warning Caleb soon found himself camped in a tree. Fortunately for Caleb the Tozawa home was located near the woods. Now perched in a branch (with more protective runes and weapons than he cared to count), Caleb now watched the home through the scope of his rifle, like a hunter sizing up a prized deer.
Caleb seemed to be in luck as he watched the Tozawa home. The family seemed to be having a BBQ, Mr. Tozawa appeared to be busying himself as his son in law Cole tended to the grill. "Geez look at the size of that guy," Caleb thought.
Caleb could tell even from a distance that Cole had military training. Just the way he carried himself told Caleb the guy was an elite. The teen had seen enough fighters over the years to tell when someone was legitimate. It wasn't Cole though that worried him.
Caleb noticed the teenage girl from earlier along with two older people he considered to be possible siblings. While he knew Naomi was a wizard he wasn't sure about the other two. That is until one of his runes began to glow.
The rune was designed to glow if magic was detected, much the way a metal detector would go off when it found metal. Calebs rune now shone like a star in the night. Whatever magic those two had was potent indeed. What was more alarming were the three toddlers circling the older girl.
The children at first appeared human, that is until they began to change. The older toddler grew a set of fox ears a fluffy fox tail popping out of her shorts as she laughed. The younger ones, who appeared to be twins, changed further. Soft brown fur covering the two as tails sprang from their rears. Caleb at first believed them to be infected lycanthropes but that didn't seem right. The children looked more feline than wolf, like a mixture of fox and cat. Caleb wondered if these were the kitaune Jim had warned him about.
From what Jim said kitsune were magical in nature and some of the greatest warriors in all the realms. As they aged they grew stronger, trying to fight an adult would be a challenge even for the most experienced hunter. Still, these were infants, still in diapers and barely old enough to walk. "Are they adopted," Caleb thought as he watched the older girl scoop the toddlers up. "Or is there an adult kitsune close by."
Pondering if he would see an adult kitsune was put to rest as Caleb now watched a portal open in the Tozawas backyard. Gasping he watched as two children, maybe 12 years old, exit the portal accompanied by a very unusual entourage.
Caleb immediately recognized the succubus. The demons wings were neatly folded, acting as a cape while her horns protruded from her forehead. Oddly the succubus sported a pair of glasses however he had seen succubus in stranger attire.
Next to the succubus was an imp or more accurately an imp familiar. The imp was in demon form, its small leathery body suspended in the air. Its tiny wings flapping as it hungrily gazed at the food being laid out. Caleb shivered as the imp smiled exposing its needle like teeth. The teen now watched as the girl said something to the imp, watching as the imp sighed before transforming into a small black tabby cat.
"A witch," he exclaimed. "Holy shit these people hang around with witches and demons! Never heard of demons and witches associating with wizards before." Wondering how this was possible, Caleb noticed first the boy, then the anthro fox standing beside him.
Caleb watched as the preteen boy began to shift in form. Dark black fur covering his body as his face pushed out into a muzzle. The werewolf than began to change further squatting down on all foura before approaching a small infant girl sitting next to Cole. Caleb was shocked to see the baby girl chortle happily as she grabbed a handful of the werewolves fur.
"A tame werewolf," a perplexed Caleb whispered. "I've never heard of Lycans being tame." Looking at the anthro fox, Caleb narrowed his eyes. "Must be that guy. He must be a kitsune."
Caleb now studied the kitsune carefully. Dressed in a traditional samurai robes, Caleb watched as the kitaune studied everyone carefully, a small smirk spreading across his face. The anthro fox man was lean yet muscular. His face stern yet soft. The five tails swishing slowly behind him as the succubus approached him, dragging him forward to now mingle with the entire family.
Caleb lowered his scope, completely befuddled by what he had seen. It seemed that the supernatural beings in this town coexisted in a way unheard of in any other part of the world. Natural enemies breaking bread with one another with no animosity what so ever.
"Dad," Caleb sighed. "Whatever the hell we've stumbled into is bigger than anything we've dealt with before."
