"...Foo-Ra-Lim-Chuck-Mor-No-Ha-Zune. Huh, that doesn't seem so bad..." Marty mumbled trying to place any of the sounds to any language he may have heard but failing. Marty gave a glance back at the original words intending to compare the phonetic to the original but noticed the paper was glowing and the edges were slowly deteriorating away... it was in his hand as he mumbled out the entire incantation! "Guhhhh!" His heart caught in his chest.
A flashback to the shopkeeper warning about squandering his chance to engage with magic on his terms sent his mind on a roller coaster. Find a friend? Too far. Neighbor? Too hit or miss. And with that the only person Marty thought he could reliably complete the spell with, was the only other person living in the house. His dad.
Where to get something left from him? Marty immediately thought kitchen and dirty dishes for saliva, but reconsidered as the spell might turn him into beef from taco night or a pig from their morning sausage... sounds crazy but with magic involved he didn't want to risk it.
"Bathroom!" Marty glanced at the spell scroll and his anxiety hiked up a notch as around 20% of the paper seemed to have disappeared. Marty went to the main bathroom and quickly realized that it was a 50/50 chance of trying to activate the spell with something from him vs his dad and he had no idea what would happen if he touched the wrong Kleenex, Q-tip, or hair first...
The master bathroom... Marty decided with apprehension... 50% of the scroll had faded to nothingness and Marty bolted into his father's room throwing aside everything about privacy and personal space he learned since childhood. Entering the bathroom he first looked at the sink and was disappointed to not see any stray hairs. Next Marty looked at his dads razor but he had apparently just replaced the blade head because it was clean, and a quick glance reminded him the garbage can was emptied on Friday. Glancing in the shower he didn't know what he was hoping to find, but it didn't jump out as an option to him. Glancing at the scroll it was now only a quarter of a normal piece of paper.
Desperate, Marty lifted the toilet seat and found even that had been recently cleaned, being clean of hair as well as anything else he might use. Partially relieved, Marty was unsure if what he used as a reagent had a direct impact on how the spell plays out. Then what was left of the scroll fell from his hands, the part of it he was holding had disintegrated and it was floating gently toward the toilet bowl.
Without thinking Marty made several panicked grabs, failing, but creating a wind and the paper instead fell next to and behind the toilet. As it touched the ground like flash paper the remainder of the scroll ignited and was gone.
The weight of what this might mean came crashing down on him but he didn't have a chance to process because he heard his dad open and shut the front door.
He quickly scurried out of the bathroom and his dad's room after quietly replacing the bathroom seat and his dads razor in it's spot behind the mirror.
"Hey Dad!" Marty called as he entered the hallway and saw he wasn't caught.
"Hey Kiddo, how was the mall?" came the reply from the kitchen.
Traumatic? Disturbing? Nauseating? "Fine." he finally settled on. "Hey, um, I found a store that I didn't get a chance to explore fully, do you think you could drop me off next weekend? It should only take 20 minutes tops." Marty had questions and the time dilation could work to his advantage. Get to the store, interrogate the attendant, run back to the car... all good, right?
"I don't think I have plans but I'll have to check, and if it works out, I don't want you spending all your money at the mall, it's overpriced." came the reply.
"I understand." Marty replied unable to think of a better response.
The evening progressed and Marty felt secure that he at least had a plan.
