For about the first half hour, Lucas worried he was going to get in trouble. By mid-morning, he decided that this was going to be his best summer after all. He could enjoy the outdoors, he could eat whenever he wanted, and he didn't have to bother getting dressed. He didn't even have to stop eating to go to the bathroom: he could his business wherever he stood, and no one would bat an eye. He felt lazy, and he felt that it was okay to be lazy. If he was going to have to start getting jobs before much longer anyway, why not just live this moment to the fullest, relax, and enjoy being a human lawn-mower?
He did feel a little guilty because he remembered his fortune from the magic shop. Wasn't he supposed to be some kind of food saint or something? Oh well, what did the silly wheel know, anyway? Right now, it felt like the only hungry person he was feeding was himself. He would spend time grazing, resting in the shade, chewing his cud, resting, and grazing some more. It sure took a lot of eating to fill his new appetite, but Lucas was fine with that. He didn't see any reason to eat anything other than grass unless he ever ran out of grass.
By early afternoon, it was a lot easier to graze because his face had extended. His tongue was long, and his nostrils were wide. In fact, he could even lick his nose, which didn't turn out to be as gross as it would have sounded. Lucas didn't realize that he was larger than anyone else in his family now and still going quickly. He just knew life was easier than it had ever been, and also that it was getting harder to stand upright or to move his fingers around. Hopefully he wouldn't have to go to some kind of joint doctor after all this. Hopefully he wouldn't get too out of shape either.
The only thing that was really bothering Lucas was the flies. He never realized there had been so many flies in the yard until they started landing on him. He wished he had some easy way to get them off, other than the gargantuan effort of raising himself up and patting himself down. He decided to just sleep under the stars and close to the grass, but when he didn't manage to get any relief from the flies even after dark, he went back into his bedroom again to try to sleep there. His sheets were gone, and the room looked like it hadn't been used in years. He lay down on the bare mattress, chewed and swallowed another great big wad of cud, and finally fell asleep.
