The Magic Shop

Terri and the Potion

added by RainingJustice 3 years ago O

"Congratulations, big gal. This has got to be rock bottom."

Sighing back at her underwear-clad reflection in the mirror, Terri glanced back down at the shimmering pink bottle on her bathroom counter and pondered just how ridiculous this whole situation was. Forget about just being sad or pathetic, this was desperation taken to the level of pure, unshackled insanity. She was, well and truly, some kind of fruit cake now, just for having actually gone ahead and dropped money on this whole impossibility. If only mom could see her now, she'd be even more ashamed than she already was.

In her defense, the half-Chinese college student had a difficult situation. Just getting enrolled in a university had presented an enormous challenge; her parents, lovely human beings that they were, had decided it was reasonable to predicate paying for her education on ceasing to indulge in this 'girl love phase'. Numerous failed attempts to convince them that she couldn't just turn off being a lesbian had culminated in the argument that left her scraping through a pre-med degree on a pitiful wage, whatever scholarship money she could scrounge up, and a mounting hill of student loan debt.

She was bright, at least, and the schoolwork wasn't an issue. Ironically, the freedom she now had - that was the big stumbling block. All those introverted years of repression, being locked away by her parents for 'her own good', hadn't exactly been condusive to strong social skills. It was hard enough maintaining friends, and you could forget about trying to find a date. She'd tried, oh she'd tried to make up for so many formative years of sexual and romantic starvation, but every girl she worked up the nerve to talk to was either straight or taken... bar one.

But Aubrey? Oh god, she'd been trying for a year to gather the courage to talk to Aubrey, and every time she faltered. She was downright perfect: tall, fire-red hair, beautiful, shapely, the cutest freckled face in the world, brilliant - and as gay as she was discerning. She wasn't going to settle for so much as a few drinks with any potential partner who couldn't be as pefect as she was, and for the relatively plain-looking and timid Terri, that put her far, far out of the running. This hadn't stopped her from turning into a lovesick puppy every time they were sharing a classroom.

She was so desperate, so in need of some way to resolve the way she felt about this demigoddess, that when a completely absurd solution presented itself... well, she was willing to give it a shot. She couldn't recall ever having seen the little shop before, nor had she been able to find it again, but the little potion vial she'd bought had been on Terri's mind for weeks. According to the strange old woman who sold it, all that was required was an infusion of the essence of beauty, and it would magically transform her into the the perfect woman she was so desperate to be.

Logic dictated that she had been swindled out of ten bucks. Emotion had informed her that it couldn't hurt to at least give it a shot.

According to the old woman 'essence of beauty' had meant some physical relic of someone who had the qualities Terri wished to gain. Hair being the easiest solution, blood being an ideal option but... well, she wasn't about to go cutting people for god's sake. The opportunity to gain that very ingredient had presented itself out of the blue while she was in a shower; a strand of hair had fallen from Anna Springs, a drop-dead gorgeous blonde who made up in curves and confidence what she severely lacked in smarts. She'd thought herself insane, taking it home and mixing it into the drink, but she'd done it anyway, just to see what happened.

Clearly it had done something. The pink potion was sparkling now, like it was full of some glittering substance. It was probably poisonous, but... she'd already acted like a little creep just to get this far. Taking it up in her hand, just inches from her lips, she once again considered her complete lack of any chance with Aubrey. Or with just about any other girl, unless her life changed drastically. It seemed so crazy, but... the idea of coming out to her parents, of going out on her own, that had all seemed crazy at one time. Maybe one little last dose of insanity wouldn't hurt.

"Screw it." She took a deep breath before throwing the whole thing back, letting the cool, smooth liquid slid right down her throat. Maybe she'd just ingested something horribly poisonous - or maybe her life was about to radically change for the better. As a tingling started to spread in her throat, she figured that she'd be finding out in a moment either way.
