A Game of Change

A Dicey Challenge - Introduction

added by Wert 2 years ago O

A young man named Sam walked into the shop, looking a bit shiftless and nervous as he perused the shelves. He'd always lived a quiet life, alone, never one for parties, or get togethers, relationships, outings. Really, he was a bit isolated, and had wandered in looking for a way to pass the time.

"Hello there," the Old Man says. "Fancy a game? One like you've never played before..." he offered up the box.

"No thanks. I don't really have anyone to play it with."

"Oh, well isn't that a shame... well you know, there's always the solitaire version." He flipped the box over, then again, and a third time, the face suddenly reading 'Solitaire Version' under the title. "It's quite simple really. You simply pick a set of dice, which are rolled to determine your success or failure in a series of challenges. Different sets of dice give bonuses and penalties depending on their color, all their on the card, see?" The Old Man opened the box, revealing several pairs of dice in various colors, and a simple sheet describing their qualities.

WHITE - What you roll is what you roll. Nothing special either way.
RED - Add +2 to your roll for Strength based challenges, but -2 for Intelligence based challenges.
ORANGE - Add +2 to your roll for Strength based challenges, but -2 for Social based challenges.
PINK - Add +2 to your roll for Strength based challenges, but -2 for Strength based challenges.
BLUE - Add +2 to your roll for Intelligence based challenges, but -2 for Social based challenges.
GOLD - Add +2 to your roll for Strength based challenges, but -2 for Strength based challenges.
PURPLE - Add +2 to your roll for Intelligence based challenges, but -2 for Intelligence based challenges.
BLACK - All rolls have a penalty of -1, however 5 times over the course of the game, you may reroll if you do not like your result.

Sam glanced at the card, curiously, asking "So where's the rest of the game? I don't see a board, or any sort of challenge cards, or anything like that... he grabbed a pair of dice out of the box, to see what was under them, and suddenly the rest crumbled to dust. The pair he'd just grabbed also seemed to melt away into a strange vapor, floating upward and fading away. "What the hell!?" he exclaimed.

The Old Man grinned. "Oh yes, I forgot to mention, you aren't the one who rolls the dice, that would be the one who watches over you. He turned to face the shop's 4th wall, staring at it with a grin. "Yes you, find a pair, 6 sides, the standard numbers. Don't trouble yourself too much on what color they really are. You know which set he chose, and I trust you to be honest in rolling them with the appropriate extra rules. Don't go fudging either, the real spice of the game is really leaving it all up to fate, and you can always start over if you want to see the paths you missed later."

Sam was very confused as the Old Man rambled at a blank wall. "Just what is going on here? Where did those go? I'm not going to pay for a game whose components just fall apart like that you know."

The Old Man smiled. "Oh don't worry about money. In any case, your game has started. I'd certainly suggest you grab a weapon on your way out, you'll need it. Probably not that cursed one, but, as the kids say these days, you do you."

Sam turned to where the Old Man was gesturing, and saw a strange rack full of medieval weaponry by the door... which seemed not to lead out onto the street he'd just walked in from, but the edge of some thick forest. He turned back to ask more questions, but The Old man was no longer there, nor any of the shop's other contents. Just bare walls. Confused, he approached the weapon rack to select something to defend himself with.
