Nothing happens.
Frustrated, Laura presses the button again. And again. And again. When nothing continues to happen, she gives up and decides to look for a way to get older elsewhere in the shop. There are so many things, one of them is bound to work. Right?
As she toddles around the shop, she gets progressively more and more disgruntled with the mess in her diaper. It’s smearing even more. To her delight, she spots a package of diapers tucked away in a corner with some other supplies for someone her age. They look to be made for a boy, but she doesn’t care. She’s not a fan of the princess-covered pink ones for girls anyways.
Laura rips open the package, grabs a diaper, and heads for the restroom, which she saw as she was wandering around. She might be two, but she still has her manners. The moment she steps into the bathroom, lights turn on. Invisible hands pick her up and carry her over to the baby changing station. Once the shock wears off, Laura is delighted. Changing her own diapers is very difficult, but it’s being done magically for her!
When the diaper is taped onto her, she feels a tingling sensation spread over her body. Before she can think on that, the invisible hands proceed to dress her in fresh clothes: a blue T-shirt reading “I Make Big Dumps and I Cannot Lie” and brown shorts. The hands finally set Laura back on the floor, in front of a floor-length mirror. Laura gapes. Her hair is a buzz cut now.
Terrified, Laura pulls open the front of her diaper. Her heart sinks. Apparently, she should have looked harder for girl diapers, because she’s now a boy.
“Great,” mutters Laura, who decides to christen himself Laurence temporarily. He shakes his head, deciding not to focus on that right now. The main concern is becoming an adult. Laurence heads for the door, but the invisible hands stop him. “What?” Laurence demands. The invisible hands pick him up again and carry him through a door in the back of the bathroom.
The room Laurence is now in has beds of all sizes, as well as cribs, toys, what looks to be a fully stocked pantry, and a flat screen TV. Laurence is set on the floor in front of the TV, which turns on.
“Hello,” says the old man on the TV. Laurence fidgets. He lost his pacifier at some point during the change and wants it back. As though reading his mind, the invisible hands pop a blue pacifier into his mouth. He suckles on it happily. “If you’re here, then you’ve entered the shop after hours looking for help, but couldn’t find a way to remedy your situation on your own. Luckily, this room has everything you’ll need to get by until I arrive at the shop to help you with your situation. If your situation has resulted in you needing assistance with general care, my invisible assistants will provide that for you. In the meantime, try to relax. Stressing can make the spells more difficult to remove.”
The TV turns off. The invisible hands quickly change Laurence out of his T-shirt and shorts and into a soft, blue onesie, then carefully put him in one of the cribs. Laurence stands on his feet, squinting at a placard at the head of the crib. He’s not sure what exactly caused this development, but he’s struggling to read it. He can make out his new name of Laurence and nothing else. Hopefully, whatever else is on the placard is information about the spells currently acting on him.
The invisible hands bring a blanket and teddy bear to Laurence, then tuck him in. The lights turn off. Before he knows it, Laurence is fast asleep.
