“This place is too creepy!” said Megan. “And you all think I'm a boy – that's creeping me out even worse. Let's just go back to the car and spend the night there. I don't like what that book did to all your memories.”
“Marvin's right,” agreed Alan. “I don't know why you all think I'm a girl. And I don't really care to find out! Let's get out of here before things get worse. I don't want that creepy book actually changing me into this 'Allison' person you think I am.”
“Oh, poor Ally!” said Janet sympathetically. “I know what it's like to wonder about being the opposite sex. Until I met your mother and fell in love with her, I sometimes thought I might be a man trapped in a woman's body. It's okay to be different. But I wish you could see yourself as the beautiful young lady you are, honey – and not some strange boy called 'Alan.'”
“That settles it,” said Steve, impatiently. “We're leaving. I don't know why you all think you're girls... except Allison, the one person who isn't. But she's right: I want to get out of this place before this gets worse and we really do get changed into something odd. Marvin, Gene, Ally... out, out, out!”
“See what I mean about your mother being aggressive and assertive!” laughed Janet, nervously trying to break the tension with some humor. “Sometimes I think Stephanie really is a man trapped in a woman's body.”
The kids both laughed nervously as Steve continued herding them around the piles of debris in the darkened room and back towards the door.
“Dammit, we're not women!” grumbled an obviously irritated Steve. “Well, Ally is... but you and I are two gay men, Gene. Get that through your head. You're queer as a three dollar bill, but you're still a man. And you too, Marvin. Knock on acting like you're a twelve-year old girl. That's getting creepy if you ask me! Now hurry up and get out the door, all of you!”
