Skipping the Pomp and Circumstance

Noah blinked as reality settled into the lie he had written. He looked down at the journal where, "I am a senior in college," was still on the page. Looking around his room, it didn't seem that different, but something was off. Noah looked to his mirror and gasped. His cheekbones and jaw had become more defined, his blond hair was longer - now to his ears, and he appeared to have aged 5 years or so. He looked down at himself and saw he looked to have put on a few pounds of muscle. Standing up, he marveled at how everything looked off, and then realized he was about six inches taller.

His room was mostly the same, though he noticed a few new pictures, one of which was him in a cap and gown in his high school's colors. Next to the picture was a frame with his high school diploma in it. He was still a few months away from graduation, but new memories flooded his mind as he recalled the past five years of a life he had never lived. He was now 23 years old and had graduated as planned and attended a local university. While he had hoped to get far away from his adoptive family, he hadn't been accepted to the colleges he could have moved to, and had been stuck living at home as he was too close to campus to dorm there.

The McCoy's hadn't been unsupportive of him per se, but they'd made him pay rent after graduation, which had necessitated getting a full-time job at the local grocery store. Fortunately the store adjusted his hours around his class schedule so he could still graduate on time. Now his family was expecting him to find his own place or increase his rent once he graduated in a few months, while 22-year-old Stacy and 20-year-old Tina had no such expectations, nor would 15-year-old Phil when he graduated high school so long as he went to college full-time.

Thinking of his family, Noah realized that they had treated him slightly better as he grew up, but they were even more distant now than they had been. He realized his parents wanted him to move out of the house, but cared enough to let him stay so long as he contributed to the household. His siblings hadn't grown any fonder of him, and Tina had almost whined when he decided where he was going to college because she had wanted to go there too, but not with her adopted brother as she had wanted to be more independent and get away from everyone.

Noah shook his head and looked down at the Journal of Fact. It definitely worked, there was no denying that. But how much could it really alter reality? Various possibilities sprang to mind, and Noah found himself grinning as all of them - lecherous, altruistic, greedy, noble, and so much more raced through his head. Closing his eyes and taking a deep breath, Noah decided which thoughts he'd entertain and began writing.
