Mad Science

The Usual Femme Fatale

added by Dislogic 2 years ago O Robot Superpowers
Author note:
Ladies aren't my usual style, but I figure the outside perspective and base character of an enemy spy gives people new opportunities. Look around at various chaotic happenings without getting too caught up in them, and be free to split off because the main character isn't stuck as the center of attention. This might make it easier to switch between scenes and exposition, without relying on where some scientist 'should' be focusing on damage control or data recording. Just have Galina pull out of watching as too risky or hack into someone's computer, and you can transition elsewhere. Feel free to make up whatever nonsensical videogame-special-move tech. Some ideas: enable Galina transforming directly in a new way to hide, blend in, identify proceedings, or fight her way out.

Sneaking into the facility under cover of optical camouflage from one of the garbage disposal management doors, the not-legendary-because-she-kept-a-low-profile spy Galina Vronsky did not appear on security footage. Her mission: identify the major Weird Research Facility projects, and acquire documentation for the Neo Soviet leadership to develop countermeasures. Getting out alive with or without secrecy being breached was essential. This part of the WRF looked pretty bleak from the outside, but to her wallhacking analytical eyes the spy identified much concealed wiring and sensor nodes she'd have to be concerned about.

In the wake of the Video Game Apocalypse, the NeoSoviets had survived and thrived by enhancing themselves through powerful cybernetic technology based on ideologically-similar stereotypical NPCs that had teamed up with them. Galina, seemingly just another stereotypical grunt worker in a camo military outfit, concealed in her body a supercomputer and technopathic sorcerous weaponry (yes, including a sword and guns with infinite ammo. Videogame logic, don't question it). A bulky, muscular, slightly-taller-than-average-but-not-notably busty brunette of fairly military brusque appearance, she'd probably pass as normal if nobody paid close attention to her cover story or incongruous physical weight. Hopefully she would be enough to hack into the WRF mainframe undetected, or fight her way out no matter what demons or aliens they sent her way.

Still under cover of conventional invisibility and skirting the main hallways' detector setups, Galina invaded an apparently-unmonitored employee breakroom. At night, it was devoid of the day shift workers the work plans implied were this room's usual hangout. An imperfect place to pause and consider her plans, but good enough to be without attention. Perhaps hide behind the kitchenette counter if things came to that. Updating the floorplan on her internal heads-up display to add specifics of the room, it seemed to Galina there were a few ways to sneak from waste disposal into the project research areas.

Unfolding some robotic attachment tools from her hands, Galina found an unobtrusive interface port meant for the facility's network under the sink and connected. Apparently the garbage disposals had a monitor to prevent people from shredding anything that really should not be shredded. Galina supposed that the researchers trying to throw out confidential data incorrectly was a serious problem, as was stuff ending up in the trash. But a breakroom? Really? At any rate, it was a vulnerability in the trash area network.

The facility was divided into several hardware networks to air-gap protect the research mainframes from anything related to...well, outside spies like her, really. It was apparently an organic solution caused by updating the archaic 1950s equipment whenever facility funding was raised by the military-industrial complex. Just staple on a new sub-building and not worry about wiring anything more advanced than the utilities? Your disorganized tax dollars at work, Americans. This did leave a set of vulnerabilities in that the majority of security was apparently bad at intercommunicating anything except alarms. So long as she didn't set off an 'alarm is no longer running' alert or actively trip anything, she could probably get very creative with hacking whatever sub-nets she got into.

And hack she did: all she had to do was pull an escalate permissions hack on the sink scanner, get a good look at work schedules and permit structure, change the alert criteria for the hallway sensors to not fire, then remove some logging. Some of this hacking was literal divination-and-electricity magic, but a lot of it was surprisingly standard software flaws. Suddenly, she could probably free-roam anywhere in the disposal area as long as an actual person didn't catch her. Able to get into the wider maintenance areas and with a good idea where any night guards or trash sorters in it should be, Galina disconnected for now. Flexing her hands to repack all her embedded tools, she contemplated her next super-spy move.

The Weird Research Facility had various wings that Galina could try to break into, focusing on different types of mad science or the logistics required to keep the base running securely. Probably she would try to break into whatever wing mainframes were vulnerable via some unobtrusive network peripheral, but directly using a terminal computer was an option if one was left undefended. Wing-to-wing connections would probably be unpredictable, but manually enabling one and then exploiting it might also work. She could maintain her stealth-centric approach, change the way she was sneaking around (maybe shrink down?), or go for some form of disguise with the advanced on-the-spot reconstructive technology she had available (pretend to be a worker, or some innocuous package to move?).

Where does Galina focus on next?
