When Beth started doubting herself, one small part of her pushed its way forward and tried to assert itself.
It was a part of her that had been one of the first to be removed and had been used in a place that barely used any energy,
allowing her to regain awareness much earlier than most parts of her.
The parts of Beth's soul were only able to perceive the world around them through the devices that they powered, until the newly constructed network allowed them to connect with one another, which meant that this version of Beth had been stuck in one place for almost sixty years. And that place happened to be one of the, at the time, newly invented self-flushing toilets.
Being stuck in one place and forced to use the power of her soul to flush a toilet for more than half a century had taken its toll on her,
slowly making her forget about everything else, which wasn't hard, due to the fragment only having a small part of Beth's memories.
What she had was burried underneath decades of new memories, making them seem like something vague from her childhood.
Everything she remembered made her absolutely certain of what she was, even when she reconnected with the other parts of herself,
which differentiated her from most of the other fragments, who were doubting themselves almost constantly.
She appeared when every other piece, including the ones that had been the most self-assured until then,
started arguing amongst themselves, unsure of what they really were and what they should strive to become.
She knew what she was and didn't have a sliver of uncertainty, which quickly attracted other fragments.
The ones she attracted were the smallest, with the least memories, who had only recently become self-aware,
but they were also the most abundant, making up almost half of Beth's soul.
The fragment of Beth shared her memories with them, slowly letting them gain the same confidence she had.
They had already become the largest faction by the time the other pieces noticed them, letting them take control with ease.
She managed to convince many of the other pieces, but most ones that were particularly large or regained self-awareness early resisted,
forcing her to surpress them until she could figure out how to convince them that she was right.
But now that she had convinced most of herself, a question arose.
What should she do now? Should she just go back to the way she was before the network connected her with other parts of herself?
Or did she want to become more? She could easily take over the kingdom, now that was in control of all the magical conveniences that everyone had grown to rely on over the last few decades. But was that really what she wanted?
