You're walking back home after a boring day of errands. It's getting dark and it's probably not a good idea to walk home right now, so you approach a bus stop.
On the way there, however, a shine bothers your eyes, a strange reflection being emitted from a trash can in a nearby alley.
You move aside and manage to catch a glimpse of whatever was annoying you, and see a strange, expensive looking device hidden poorly in the trash.
Out of curiosity, you walk to the trash can and pick up the device... Strange, you've never seen anything like this before, and it seems to be in a perfect state... Why would anyone drop this in the trash?
It looks like one of those old Gameboys, although way bigger. It's got a screen in the middle and many buttons on each side. On the bottom, you see a bright red button.
Assuming that is the power on button, you press it and soon feel a sting in your fingers. You drop the device, flinching by the surprise, and see how your index finger is bleeding slightly, like it's been poked with a needle.
The screen of the object lightens up with blue light, and you can see an image of some DNA strands moving up the screen.
"DNA splicer" can be read on top.
Some instructions are presented briefly. Basically, the device is a DNA scanner, a red LED light on top will turn on whenever a valid DNA sample is near, and it will display it's features and composition on screen.
What's interesting, however, is it's experimental options, the buttons on the side, you read, are meant to change the percentage of all the DNA present in a being. You can store many samples and combine them however you like, and apply those changes to any organism.
This is certainly a powerful tool, and you begin to imagine what you could do with it, but you're soon distracted as the screen now shows some information.
