"Fit in?" you can't help but mutter. Did you land yourself in some weird version of the Stepford Wives? You were kind of eager for this move, getting to see different places and moving up in the company, but you probably should have read the confidentiality agreements more carefully. Was there something you missed?
As you seem to get closer to your destination, you pass a large gate, your chauffeur scanning her ID badge at the fence to let you through. The wall you just passed seemed large and appeared to stretch a long way into the distance. Also, there were some odd symbols, ones you would almost say were religious in nature. Now you really are starting to get a bit nervous. It was supposed to be a company-owned community, yes, but how much security was really necessary? That's when you see the sign.
"Welcome to the town of...Hellbent?" You read aloud, but you are distracted by something else. "Is there a forest fire nearby? The sky seems a little red..."
"Oh, that's just the portal," the chauffeur responds matter-of-factly, although you are immediately lost. "The effects are isolated by the wall, so it's only within the city limits. It is a little weird when you first get here, but the residents seem to not mind after a bit."
"P-portal?" you stutter, but not before your eye is caught by what appears to be a couple walking along one of the sidewalks. And what you see makes you do a double-take. "Is there some sort of comics convention going on here?"
"Haha, no," the chauffeur chuckles good-naturedly. "At least, not today. There is a festival this weekend though, can't remember what it's called, you should be able to find out at the city center..."
You are too dumbfounded to pay attention to what she is saying. The couple you saw, one had horns coming out of their head, and the other...a ropy tail and something like bat wings? And their dog...did it have three heads?
"Wait, wait! When you said portal, you meant a portal to...?" you interrupt.
"Oh, Hell, of course. Or Tartarus, the Underworld, whatever they're calling it nowadays," the chauffeur replies, her nonchalance creeping you out. "Everybody who lives here gains demonic traits in a few days, it varies a bit, but so far nothing especially harmful. Don't worry, the company helps with all adjustments, and they've been very accommodating when anyone physically changes. Someone will stop by later for orientation and to let you know what to expect. You'd be surprised how little people worry about their demonic aspects, but the gender change, for some reason that's the one that shocks them," the chauffeur giggles innocently, then turns the wheel into the driveway of a mansion that, while well-maintained, has an architectural quality that reminds you of a haunted house.
"Welcome to your new home, Miss!"
