While you have a dozen questions on the tip of your tongue, you find yourself exiting the van and walking up to the door of the large house, somehow drawn to it. In some corner of your mind, you wonder if your driver is just pulling your leg. She's just a chauffeur, after all. Once you talked to someone in charge, things would begin to make sense. You hoped.
You open the door and wander in, surprised at the decor. While the chauffeur was right, everything was state of the art, the furniture and appliance style itself was rather antique instead of contemporary, and the colors tended to be dark. The reddish glow from outside only added to the eerie impression.
But it was expensive, no doubt about that. Way above your current pay grade, but supplied for free by the company as thanks for moving here. Where else would you get a deal like this? You could stay here for a few years, pad your savings, then move somewhere a little more cozy. While you are lost in thought, the chauffeur has unloaded your luggage from the van and piled it neatly in the entryway.
"The rest of your belongings should be here tomorrow, Miss," you hear the chauffeur calling out from the doorway. "So should the company orientation representative. I'll be heading out now. Good luck!"
It takes a minute for the chauffeur's comments to register, and you sprint back downstairs just in time to hear the van pull out of the driveway. Looks like you were well and truly here to stay. You stare at your luggage, grab a duffle and your backpack, then head off to find the bedroom.
Which does not disappoint. A huge four-poster bed with canopy awaited you, and a luxurious bathroom with, as promised, a jacuzzi tub. The fact that it sits on rather ominous clawed feet is brushed aside. You decide to settle in, then clear things up with the company rep tomorrow. It was a long day, it was late, and you just want to snooze. All tidied up and in your pajamas, you roll into the center of the huge bed and fall asleep.
