Ken woke up, hoping that the book may have been a bad dream. Unfortunately, he got a text from his friend Lane that he was excited to see what he got for his sport. He put that he liked lifting heavy things and throwing a football, hoping he would be placed into the football team. Ken went about his morning in a daze, while his sister teased him about being a Noncho. Apparently, her past was written to have her be exactly who she was. Since she was tall, she had chosen volleyball.
Ken sat next to Lane, who was flexing a lot of the trip into school. Ken could hear the chatter from folk about signing up for tennis, cheerleading, basketball and all sorts of other sports, even ones his school didn't have yesterday. What was a discus anyway?
The two boys got into school and put their stuff in their locker, before a school assembly was called. Everyone in school made their way into the gym.
"Everyone, today we see what our 8th graders chose for their sport. Our school has a long history of athletic success, and this year appears to be no different. All of our student-athletes have been placed into a perfect sport for each of them. We, once again, have no nonchos this year," said the principal to cheers.
"Anyone not in the 8th grade, you can go to first period. Thank you for coming to support your fellow students." Most of the kids left.
"So, just want to give you the ground rules. Your sports have been chosen, and cannot be changed. You will get better at your sport each year and, if desired, you can continue in university with the same sport. Your equipment will be provided by the school. Not everyone got their first choice, but this year the algorithm did well, giving 85% first choices. You will get your sport when you get back to your locker. You can take the rest of first period checking what your sport is, and getting your gear. You will join your team for lunch. Go Tigers!" said the principal before leaving the gym.
Ken and Lane went to their lockers. A bunch of people were already at theirs. There were squeals of delight, and high fives. One guy said, "Oh man, I wanted fencing, but they gave me ultimate frisbee." Lane opened his locker, opened the envelope and shows Ken the word "Football."
