Counselor Brooke turns to the group of girls gathered around her at the edge of the dock. “Alright girls, just remember the rules. No doing stunts off the edge of the dock—if you want to, like, do that we’ve got a platform out there.” She points to a inflatable dock located a fair ways out in the lake. “That way, we don’t have to worry about one of you girls like, hitting your head on rocks or something. We are going to hold a swim test just to check everyone’s like, abilities in the water—no different than what you have to do before they let you hop on a board to catch some waves, you know?”
You nod; after all, that was no different than any other camp you’d been to where they’d have swimming activities. Brooke smiles again. “And if, like, you are afraid of the water or nervous and stuff, don’t be! I’m lifeguard certified, and so are all the other counselors here at Camp Ravenwood. Plus, the other major rule is no one comes out to the lake without your swim buddy.” Her face then adopts an uncharacteristically stern look. “But if you girls break the rules more than like, once, then you won’t get to go out on the lake for the duration of your stay. And that would really, like suck, so just do us all a favor and stay safe, okay?”
You nod again and readily agree, and the other girls’ around you nod as well. Brooke flashes a smile. “Okay then, I want everyone to give me a single file line here on the dock then. Oh, and just so you know, the first of Camp Ravenwood’s socials is tomorrow night.” she adds. Socials? You didn’t remember the counselors mentioning those before. Next to you, Holly raises her hand. “What do you mean?” She asks curiously. Brooke giggles.
“The dances with the boys camp across the lake, Camp Eagle’s Nest. Well, maybe dance isn’t the right word, it’s not really formal unless the campers want to dress up, but it’s a chance to meet even more new friends, and that’s what we are here for, right? Plus, like, I think you’ll find the boys there have more in common with you then you think.” She giggled again.
Wait, so there was an all guys camp across the lake? Honestly that didn’t surprise you too much, after all Camp Ravenwood was only for girls like you—-err....for girls. For some odd reason you couldn’t help but feel excited at the thought of the dances. Back home you’d always loved getting all dressed up and going to the dances with your teammates. Usually you just ended up in a loose group laughing as the boys “showed off” their dance moves....wait. That wasn’t right...was it? You also remember not really going to dances, and the one time you did more or less just hovering in a corner and leaving early. You blinked again. This changing memories thing was, like, totally bizarre. And had there been something weird about the way Counselor Brooke had said “boys”? Maybe you were just thinking too much?
Your contemplations were interrupted by an impatient poke from the girl behind you. “Hey, it’s your turn to do the swim test. Snap out of it.” She said. With an apology you head down to the end of the dock, where counselor Brooke, already in the water, looks at you with amusement.
“Alright, swim test is simple. Just make it to the dock out there and back here. I’ll be right near by you the whole time, so don’t worry about a thing!” She says cheerfully. You nod and hop into the water, beginning to swim. Maybe it’s because your new body is in better shape, but swimming is a lot easier than you remember. You make it to the dock and back with relative ease, and then climb back onshore to watch the oth-the girls behind you do their tests.
Once everyone finished counselor Brooke smiles again and nods. “Okay, you all are good to go! If you want take a canoe out just let me know and I’ll help you get it set up; otherwise, like, just have fun!”
You and the other campers happily get into the lake and begin splashing around. You decide to swim out to the dock floating out in the lake and sunbathe a little there; Holly and a few other girls have a similar idea and soon you are sprawled out in comfort feeling the platform slightly bob as the waves roll past. The feeling brings back happy memories of you in a bikini at the beach, relaxing on your towel—wait. What? You know that can’t be right, but thinking of you wearing a boy’s swimsuit just doesn’t make sense anymore. You sigh. Maybe you should just lie back and relax. After all, the mysteries of this camp aren’t going anywhere...right?
After a while.....
