“So what's this theory you've got?” asked Victor as they both entered the cafeteria and got in line behind some boy having trouble deciding between pizza and pasta. Ultimately he chose pasta, a slice of apple pie and a soft drink, and moved on towards the register to pay for his food.
“OK, so I had this really weird dream last night where I was trapped in the body of my grandmother Nellie.”
“Like what everyone is calling you now?” asked Victor incredulously, in a mildly frightened girlish voice which Miles found cute for some reason.
“Exactly” said Miles. “It was so bizarre. It was like I WAS her. It didn't even feel like a dream. It felt like I had gone back in time sixty years and ended up in her body. I was living her life. I met her friends. We watched Singing In The Rain together! And this boy named Thomas was holding my hand and making corny pick up lines like we on a date or something, but I couldn't my grandma's emotions that she really liked this boy and wanted him to ask her to the dance. Then I remember walking home, and I met my great grandparents when they were younger. They gave me this” said Miles, tugging on the necklace that he had been wearing all morning.
“So what does all this got to do with what's happening?”
“My mom really misses my grandmother. Misses her more than most people miss their moms. She was completely broken when Grandma Nellie died, and she said more than once that she'd do anything to get her back. We had a fight last night, and Mom wished that I was never born. I figure, hey, since magic is obviously real, maybe wishes are real too. I mean, it should be impossible what's happening to us. Now that it isn't...”
Miles drifted off. He couldn't let himself consider the possibility that his mom done this deliberately to him and not through some cosmic joke. He would never forgive her if that was the case.
“There are no other leads than this. It has to be my mom. I can't think of a single person who'd want to do this to me more than Mom.”
“Jesus” said Victor. “And I thought my family was dysfunctional.”
“Yeah, we're in pretty dire straights, my mom and I.”
“I'd say that we're the ones in dire straights, not your mom, mate.”
While Victor and Miles were speculating about the curious fate that was being bestowed upon them, they absentmindedly slid their lunch trays across the metal counter, picking the items they wanted. Normally Victor and Miles would pick something tasty like Sloppy Joes or macaroni & cheese or the pasta that the boy had chosen a moment ago. They didn't realize that the spell they were under was affecting their food choices as well. As Victor and Miles selected their menu items and placed them onto their lunch trays, Molly's magic transformed Victor's tacos into stuffed squash and his hash-browns into a small bowl of white rice. Meanwhile, Miles's delicious looking bowl of chili had transformed into a more healthy bowl of vegan cauliflower risotto and his slice of apple pie into an orange. Their soft drinks had both respectively turned into glasses of cranberry juice. Both boys had been so wrapped up in their conversation that they didn't notice these changes. That is until they reached the end of line...
“Hey, what the....!” was Miles's indignant response as the cashier gave the total for this crap he hadn't ordered. Miles reluctantly paid the woman, not wanting to cause a scene. This wasn't her fault. Whatever had altered their lunch menu items was obviously the same force that had been monkeying around with them all day. Victor followed suit, paying the woman in despite of feeling really gipped. Miles and Victor then carried their lunch trays while looking for a place to sit.
“It's not enough that we're being turned into girls, but I'm being denied tacos as well?!” whined Victor.
“Oh stop being such a drama queen. This is like the least offensive thing that's happened to us all day”.
“Hey Nellie! Hey Victoria! Wanna come sit with us?” asked a girl who sounded familiar. Miles and Victor turned to their right and saw...
