You thought it over for a bit; you were hungry, but you were also tired and you'd had a lot thrown at you today. "I think I'll stay here and read for a bit, if that's okay," you said. "Maybe grab a snack a little later. "
"Sure thing!" Maddie said from the other side of the door. "Just let us know if you need anything, or change your mind!" You could hear the sound of her footsteps leaving, and then you plopped down on your bed and stared up at the ceiling. This day certainly hadn't gone like you'd thought it would when you'd heard you'd be moving to a new town for a promotion! It was still a lot to process and you weren't sure you could wrap your mind around everything. Maybe you just needed some time to rest and take your mind off things.
You picked up the book you were currently reading from where you'd placed it on your nightstand and opened to where you'd left off last night. It was a pretty straightforward epic fantasy - plucky rebels versus an evil empire and all that - but it had cool magic and some cool fight scenes, and you'd read it before so you knew it would end well. Laying back in your bed, you started to read, not noticing how the book seemed to tingle in your hands...
You'd left off at the part where the main heroine was infiltrating the evil empire's court, just before she met her love interest, an important nobleman's son who, of course, eventually turned to the rebellion's side. You'd never really paid much attention to the romance before, since it was a fairly minor subplot and you enjoyed this book for the action and the intrigue. The further you read tonight, though, the more you realized something was different. For one thing, you'd been pretty sure the love interest character was a guy - but tonight, *he* had somehow been replaced by *she*. The same character, clearly, just a girl. And somehow that made the whole subplot more interesting. Much, *much* more interesting.
Some part of you realized that this was an effect of the magic of this town, that somehow it was strong enough to effect even the story in a book; the rest of you didn't care. You found yourself racing through the book, turning the pages quickly as you tried to get to the next love scene, unable to shake the images from your mind. The girls' eyes meeting across the ballroom... that sizzling moment of attraction, hearts beating faster, breath coming short... you see them dancing together, curvy bodies under flowing gowns just avoiding touching each other, cleavage rising and falling, just barely hidden by low necklines, as they stare at one another... you'd remembered this book being clean, but the sexual tension rising off the page was palpable now... you could feel your own heart beating faster, imagining how it would feel to be in that room, wearing one of those dresses, another girl's body pressing up against yours... you turned the pages even faster now, skipping whole chunks of plot as you found yourself reaching the beginnings of a *very* explicit sex scene you were absolutely certain had never been there before, desperate to see what happened next...
Suddenly...
