“What if...what if I let you stay home today?” asked Molly desperately just before Miles was about to unlock the front door. He paused for a moment to consider.
“Why?” asked Miles, genuinely perplexed, turning around to face his mother.
Molly's face reddened a little, struggling to think of how to breech the subject without revealing her true intentions...
“I...Miles, I'm going to be honest. I'm a witch. I want to prove to you that magic exists. I want to...show you your true calling” Molly bluffed.
“Whatever” scoffed Miles, disappointed at the letdown of an explanation. He thought that his mom had something important to say for once. Instead, she's either going crazy or is lying for attention. “Maybe she's getting lonely in her old age?” he thought briefly before turning around to unlock the door.
“Please believe me! I can prove it” said Molly insistently, holding her hands in front of her in a vulnerable looking display.
Miles turned around one more time.
“Magic. I'm assuming you're not talking about card tricks?”
Molly shook her head.
“No. More esoteric stuff. Weird stuff.”
Miles sighed.
“Mom, I don't know what's gotten into you. Are you going senile or something?”
“Miles!” Molly shouted angrily, before composing herself. “OK, tell you what. I'm going to show you a very old spellbook that I own. I just want to see what you can do.”
“Why?”
Molly didn't tell Miles how she had always wanted a sister.
****************
Molly took out her spellbook, casting a glamour over the pages which she used to cause Miles's transformation, and handed it to him.
“Real magic is an art. It may seem like it's just reading words off of a page, but those words have real meaning behind them. If you don't have the right mental discipline, an incantation meant to make a teacup turn invisible could end up setting you on fire instead.”
“Why would someone want to make a teacup invisible” said Miles sarcastically as he sat on the living room couching, flipping through the book.
Molly had called Miles in sick today. She was going to see his transformation before her very eyes, and she couldn't wait to view the results. Hopefully by the end, her dark experiment would be worth it.
Miles found a spell he found interesting. He began to speak aloud.
Option 1: The kid is a natural! Miles has a strong affinity for wielding magic and quickly learns the basics. Meanwhile, while he is practicing, his clothes start becoming prototypical female goth clothing.
Option 2: Miles struggles to even levitate a pencil, and blows off his mother's offer to learn about magic, but then he notices that his voice has permanently changed into one of a female adult.
