Ben held on tight on his mom’s shoe as she reached the bottom of the stairs and turned towards the kitchen. This was really too cool, going along for the ride in a world of giants.
Just then, the doorbell rang. Ben’s mother turned to go get it, causing Ben to get flung around on the shoe. He briefly lost his grip and began sliding off, but managed to grab onto the toe of the shoe. He knew he wouldn’t be able to last long like this, so he held on tight, only giving up and sliding to the ground when his mom stopped at the front door.
He looked up to see who it was, and he couldn’t believe his eyes. “Well hello Jamie,” his giant mother said, “I have to admit, I didn’t expect to see you here again.”
Ben couldn’t believe it. There was his ex-girlfriend, right there in the flesh. But now, instead of being five-foot-four and significantly shorter than him, now she was a titanic giantess. She could crush him in an instant without even thinking about it.
In fact, that’s what she almost did once before. The reason Ben’s mom was surprised to see her was that Jamie had cheated on him and then dumped him for the other guy. He was a total asshole too.
“I know, Mrs. Doorley,” said Ben’s giant ex. “In fact, that’s why I’m here. I owe Ben an apology.” Ben was surprised to hear this, but he still wanted to see it play out.
“Well, Jamie, if that’s the case, then I think you can find time to do that at school.”
“I can’t, though, Mrs. Doorley. If I approach Ben in school, it’ll be a big deal and everyone will see what I’m doing. I just want to say I’m sorry in private where we can just talk.”
“Be that as it may, young lady, after what you’ve done, I’m not going to tell Ben he has to talk to you. That will be his decision.”
It took Ben a second to realize it, but his mom wasn’t just defending his honor. His mom had no idea where he was, either, so she couldn’t bring Ben to the front door even if she wanted to.
But that gave Ben an idea: maybe he would like to hang out with Jamie some more… when she didn’t know about it. Maybe he could stow away with her for a few hours and see what she was up to these days. Then he could decide if he wanted to talk to her again.
So while she was hashing it out with Ben’s mom, Ben dashed forward. He took a running leap past the front doorway, trying to land on Jamie’s shoe. He missed, landing hard on the welcome mat, but he realized as he was in the air that he was better off not having Jamie feel the impact of him on her shoe. That would have been awkward. Instead, he scrambled up onto her open-toed sandals and gripped onto the buckle.
Soon enough, Jamie was walking back to her car and Ben was once again holding on for dear life. He really needed to find a new way of getting around when shrunk. Fortunately, when she got into the car, Ben noticed Jamie’s purse was on the floor of the passenger seat. He scrambled off her shoe and over to the purse as soon as she got into the car. As she drove out of Ben’s driveway, he leapt down inside the purse and wondered where she was going next.
