Wendy and Miles arrived at the library and sat down at an unoccupied table. Wendy took some books out of her backpack, and Miles found himself doing likewise.
Miles decided to try and see if he could make Wendy notice the changes going on in him.
Miles steeled himself to ask Wendy if she hadn't noticed any changes in him, but what came out of his mouth was:
"What do you think we should go over first, Wendy?"
Wait, that wasn't what I meant to say!, he thought.
"Well, we've got English next period", replied Wendy. "Are you all set for that?"
Miles nodded.
"Well, we've got that physics lab this afternoon, let's go over that."
Miles found himself consenting, and the two began diligently preparing for that day's physics experiment. Several times, he tried to discuss his slow transformation with Wendy, but each time, he found his words turning back to schoolwork.
Whatever is doing this to me, he thought, it's not letting me discuss it with anyone!
Eventually, the bell rang to announce the end of the period. Miles and Wendy put their books away and stood up. Miles noticed several things at once. His shirt had completed its transformation into a girl's pink blouse, his tan cargo pants had transformed into into a blue skirt that extended to just below his knees and his white socks had turned blue and extended up to meet his skirt. He was now completely in girl's clothing! The other thing he noticed was that he could now almost look at Wendy eye-to-eye. He'd always been a good head taller than her, but now he was only two inches taller than her at best! He had shrunk!
"Quit daydreaming, girl", said Wendy. "Come on, Nellie, we've got to get to English class!"
Wendy grabbed his hand and pulled him along.
She called me "Nellie!" But that's not my name, that was my grandmother's name!, he thought. My name is...is...
To his horror, he found that he could not remember any other name for himself but "Nellie Johnson". He was certain that "Johnson" had always been right, but somehow he knew that just a few short moments ago, he'd had a different first name, but now it was completely on from his mind. What was happening? Was he somehow turning into his grandmother? Was Nellie Adams being re-born as "Nellie Johnson"? Was that what that dream had been about? But his grandmother had always loved him! He couldn't imagine her trying to take over his life, even if her ghost or something was still around! But who else would want to - well, of course, his mother! he just might do something like this, if she could! But how could she?
Nellie - as s/he now had to think of hirself - was distracted from hir thoughts by....
