Nellie and Wendy arrive at their English classroom and took their seats. Their teacher, Ms. MacAskill, walked in and class began.
Ms. MacAskill began her lecture - continuing the discussion of George Orwell's novel 1984. At length, she began asking students questions about the book. Eventually, she turned to Nellie and said:
"Alright, Ms.Johnson, in your opinion, what revisions might Orwell make in his book if he could see the world as it it today?"
Nellie panicked. S/he had no recollection of having actually done the reading, and had no idea of how to answer the question. To hir surprise, however, an answer began to spill out of hir mouth.
"Well, ma'am, I think he would see that modern technology would allow the Oceanic surveillance state to monitor people even more closely than he could have imagined back in 1948. Also, I think he might have put more in about how the lifestyle of Oceania affected the environment, - how Big Brother might have dealt with global warming. You know, things that couldn't be wished away by propaganda."
S/he paused. All of that had come out in one breath, but even while s/he was giving hir brief answer, hir voice had changed, becoming softer, more feminine. Hir new voice sounded familiar, though - s/he realized with a shock that it was the same voice hir grandmother had during hir dream the night before. Now, more than ever, s/he was convinced that s/he was turning into hir grandmother - or at least, some sort of version of her.
Ms. MacAskill nodded at Nellie's answer, and turned hir attention to another "victim". Wendy gave hir a surreptitious nod of approval. In time, the class ended. Nellie had gym, but Wendy had Spanish class, so the two friends went their separate way.
