Nothing appeared to happen as a result of Jessie's wish -- Kristina was still out cold on the floor of the foyer. "Shit, I should have assumed a genie can't grant her own wishes," Jessie muttered.
"What's going on?" asked a voice in an urgent whisper.
Jessie turned around to see a teenage girl in a nightgown standing there. She recognized her from the family photos as the older of Kristina's children. She put up her hands and said in what she hoped was a reassuring voice, "Okay, I know this looks weird, but I'm a genie, and your mother made an accidental wish that made her go to sleep."
"Right here?" asked the girl.
"Well, it was at the airport. She wished she could go home and sleep for 12 hours. I, uh, wound up coming along."
The girl still looked extremely skeptical, so Jessie slowly lowered the hand in which she held her bottle, and held it out. "Look, if you don't believe me, make a wish. It may work if you don't touch my bottle, but it seems like it definitely works if you do."
Slowly, the girl reached out and gently wrapped a hand around the bottle's neck, lifting it as if she was confused about why it weighed as much as it did. "Okay," said Jessie, "that should make you my master, so just say 'I wish' and then whatever you want."
The girl looked down at the lamp in her hand, then back up at Jessie, and said...
