You walk slowly among the booths, trying not to stand out too much, and kind of hoping no one would actually interact with you. You're a bit of an introvert, and to you the best club would be one where you can find your own corner to read with no interruptions. Not that you want to be a part of a book club...you want to read books, not talk to other people about them. And it wasn't like anyone would be into the same books you were. Fantasy and comics and scifi, in high school you'd either be pegged as immature, geeky, or nerdy. Well, you probably were all three anyway.
You trudge past annoying clubs like the Glee club and the Flag Football club, and finally come to the furthest corner of the gym, nearly out of sight due to the bleachers. There, you find a booth with three bored, average-looking students under a sign that says: "Superhero Club."
Now that actually sounds promising! Did they like old-school comics or the newer movies, or maybe anime? You try working up the courage to ask, but end up standing there awkwardly giving them a rather odd stare. Two of the students remain engrossed in other activities, one a phone, and the other what looks like a model figurine, but the third happens to raise her head and look at you.
"Oh, hey," the bespectacled girl with tan skin and a black-haired bob nods at you in greeting. "Looking to join?"
The guy with the figurine is a short blond kid with a rather babyface look, almost appearing too young for high school, while the guy on his phone is a wavy-haired brunette and bit stocky, although not in an athletic way. Neither of them pay you any mind, as though you were invisible.
"Um...yeah...I guess..." you stammer out.
"Great!" the girl replies, with no further explanation. "I'm Priya. That's Lucian and Tom," nodding towards the blonde and the brunette respectively. "Let's go guys, we got our newest member!"
Without even glancing at you, the two guys grab their stuff from the booth as Priya takes down the sign and ushers you out of the gym exit towards what you assume is the room used as the clubroom.
"Oh...um...I'm not sure....that is..." you try to break the momentum, but find yourself being whisked along with the flow. Eventually, you find yourself in a rather deserted room far from most of the classrooms, which almost looks like a storage closet, but surprisingly roomy and neat. The boys go in and take seats in what you are assume are their usual areas, considering their familiarity with the items there, but Priya is still shepherding you.
"Let's see...oh, what's your name?" Priya asks, oddly naturally given the fact that she's practically shanghaied you.
"Ruby," you can't help but reply, but before you can ask anything else...
"Well, Ruby, I guess the first thing we should do is have you choose your superhero costume," Priya says matter-of-factly, directing you to a closet filled with...superhero outfits? Or what looked like superhero costumes, anyway. Were these guys cosplayers?
You're a bit wary considering you've been practically roped into joining this club, but when you think about it, why not? They might be a bunch of weirdos, but so were you, and they seemed relatively harmless. At any rate, you had to join a club, so why not this one? At least it'll get you through the school year. Sighing, you begin to examine the outfits in the closet, and finally pull one out.
