Mom was putting away the last few items into her bag. She would be gone for a whole 3 months on a "business trip" to Europe. Of course you already knew she is a witch, everybody in your family does, but to everybody else this international magic meet-up was disguised as traveling for work. You'd be home alone with your younger sister, since your dad died 5 years ago when you were 13. That's actually how your mom became a witch, researching ways to bring him back, only to learn that there is no such thing even with magic.
"Nathan, I know you will look out for Tracy as you always do. She has a knack for getting into trouble, but so far we were always able to mend it!" she told you.
Your sister is 15 now, while you are 18. You didn't always get along perfectly and her being able to use some magic, while you weren't was always fuel for trouble. That memory of when she used a ritual to turn all your hair green is still fresh in your mind. All your hair, even down there. It wasn't all fighting between you two, though. When she messed up something she'd actually come to you first, to see if you could help. She still owes you for cleaning up the bathroom after she made herself slimy all over. Don't practice a frog transformation curse in front of a mirror. She managed to turn herself back, but all the mucus remained.
"Okay mom, but you were always there to stop her from magically bullying me. How should I deal with that now?" you ask her, a little nervous.
"Well, I already asked around in my covenant. They came up with some options." she turns towards you after closing the suitcase.
"Margaret suggested just turning you into a girl, with a little magical history manipulation you'd even have all the same knowledge as your sister."
"Okay, next option?" you ask, wanting to keep your boy bits if possible.
"Well we assumed that wouldn't be too attractive of a choice, so Jessica suggested a pact to turn you into a warlock. A temporary pact to an otherworldly being should allow you to tap into magic while I'm gone. These pacts usually involve some form of payment though, but since it's just temporary the cost is probably not too terrible." she offers as the second option.
"Hmm, okay." you think when your mom interrupts with a third option.
"There's another one. The third and last one came from our youngest member, Bethany. She suggested instead of you forming a pact, we could infuse a magical spirit into an item of yours. Specifically she suggested your smartphone. This option is the least predictable in terms of outcome, but also the safest for you. Well at least safest as long as you don't need to use it."
"Does it have to be my phone? Can't we buy a new one?" you ask, but are quickly told that it has to be yours or the spirit won't bite.
"This is quite a choice." you sigh and look at her.
"Well, there is also always the option of trusting in your sister not causing any chaos. Anything bigger can always be dealt with by Jonah, the warlock protecting this city."
