The Canard shipped off to chart some new planets! The duck shaped ship had a Doctor Brian an aged man who came aboard for a leisurely final assignment before retiring, Engineer Scotch a rugged bearded bear of a man who loved putting everything together although his technical knowledge wasn't the best, Captain Williams a war criminal several times over who was too good at captaining to completely let go, Analyst Martin a recent graduate who would be getting as much experience he could about the universe, and then the Assistant Droid... who was a droid and sort of counted as a crew member... to some people, and this wasn't a particularly fancy or complex model. The was off and drifting through space as the Federation had given them the directions to go... In a particular direction and maybe wander a bit if they found something of interest, and maybe eventually come back if the connection got too weak.
Captain Williams strolled into the break room to see Scotch downing what seemed to be his namesake, Brian sipping some wine, Martin trying to drink what looked like scotch for the first time, and the Droid was just serving them their drinks and maybe some food. "What on earth are you all doing!?!" The somewhat crooked man yelled out.
Scotch smirked and said "Toasting to a perfectly sound launch with no needs for any repairs."
"To no repairs!" Dr. Brian raised his glass to the toast.
"These aren't leisure hours yet! What if we get hit by enemy missiles or a chunk of space junk tears a hole through our hull? What if one of us gets injured! What if we need someone to look at something! What if... I want a snack?!?" Williams argued
"Currently we have peanuts available, but we can always synthesize other foodstuffs Captain." the Droid responded in it's robotic monotone.
Scotch said "They may have built the Canard on the budget, but the scanners are still top notch. We'll be alerted of anything in time to get sobered up."
Dr. Brian nodded and said "Worst comes to worse we've got the cloning bay."
Williams scowled and asked "How about I throw you lot out of the air lock and we test out this cloning bay?" There was a silence for a bit.
Martin asked "Couldn't we just Mutiny and throw you out of the airlock? I think Scotch alone coul-"
Scotch said "Don't finish that thought kid. Williams may not be joking, but best not to ever question your Federation captain."
Williams had a bit of a crazed look in his eye and said "How about we throw just Martin out of the airlock then? Test out the cloning bay and teach him a lesson."
"Well I wouldn't recommend that." Dr. Brian advised "Unless we want to mess with the setting of memory wiping the past few minutes of the person's life that can lead to serious mental trauma that I'm not prepared to easily deal with."
Captain Williams looked like he might have an aneurism, but then let out a sigh and said "Go ahead and have your little fun. I'll just be piloting this ship alone, and order when needed..." he then left while grumbling about something.
Martin asked "The clone bay works right?"
Scotch said "It's functional, checked it before we left."
Martin shook his head and clarified "I mean not the clone thing, but the bringing us in particular back to life."
Dr. Brian sighed and said "All the studies on it show that yes it works that way." he took another sip of his wine and said "I still wouldn't be eager to die though, and with luck we wont be dying any time soon."
However at some point they'd die and figure out something was wrong with the cloning bay, and the first to find out would be...
