Tori Vordenburg and Erzulie Lachouette were packing up their things in the The Sheep Heid Inn. They would soon be leaving for America's Pacific Northwest to find out just what was going on with Beck Hamilton. Helping them were the Scotswoman Fiona MacGorrie and the vampire Megan Swanson, both of whom the monster hunters had saved from Drusilla last night.
"This is so exciting!" Megan chirped. "I'm a detective!"
"Could you quit talking for just two minutes, leech?" Tori sighed. "How can you even babble so happily when you know Erzulie and I both hate your bloodsucking guts?!"
"Och, gang easy oan Megan, Tori," said Fiona. "She juist wants tae hulp."
Tori scratched awkwardly at the back of her neck. "Yes... well... I maaaaay have something that'll help her be... helpful. It's not that I like a no-good fang like her! I just can't afford to have an ally burn to ashes in the middle of a mission." She handed Megan a golden amulet shaped like the sun. "This is an Amulet of Daywalking. Looted it off a vampire child molester in Budapest. If you wear it around your neck, the Sun can't kill you. It can still make your skin itch like hell on a bright, clear day, but you'll live."
Megan threw her arms around Tori. "Oh my God, Tori! That's so sweet!"
"Hey, hey, hey!" Erzulie shouted, trying to separate the two. "Get off of my girlfriend, leech!"
"Oops," Megan said sheepishly. "Sorry."
"Let's a' huv a go at gittin' alang wi' each ither," said Fiona. "We a' hae a very dangerous jab ahead o' us. Let's nae mak' it any mair pernicketie than it haes tae be by fightin' each ither."
Tori looked at Fiona seriously. "I hope you understand just how dangerous a job it really is, Fiona. We've had help before, and a lot of the ones who didn't get killed got transformed by the powers of myth and magic."
"Ah wouldn't mynd as lang as it isnae a vampire," said Fiona. "Bein' a fairy or a werebeast micht actually be kind o' fun."
Tori and Erzulie shared a nervous glance.
"As fur death," Fiona went on, "ah dinnae fear it. Ah've awready bin a vampire, 'n' that's muckle worse than normal death."
"Your a brave woman, Fiona MacGorrie," said Erzulie. "How did your reunion with Hamish go?"
Fiona beamed. "Faither wis sae ower joyed tae see me! he actually tellt me 'twas th' foremaist time he'd smiled sin ah wis taken by th' moon's daughter. Tae be honest, a'm feelin' a bawherr ill aboot running aff again sae fleet."
"Don't worry," said Tori. "This mission doesn't sound like a high-risk one. You'll be back with home in no time. There! All packed! Now let's get these suitcases in the car and head for the airport."
