As he landed on his sock covered feet at the base of the stairs, Jeff was full of excited energy. He hadn't felt this energetic since he was actually 8, and he was anxious to see how things had changed. All the pictures on the walls had altered. His older brother, Alex, was now in prominence in many of the places pictures of him had been, and pictures of him were now scattered in different places. His younger sister, Kate, was about the same spots.
"Jeff, that you?" Alex's voice came from the living room. Jeff saw the boy there, exactly as he remembered him, watching tv.
"Hi Alex! Notice anything different bout me?" Jeff asked.
The thirteen year old blinked at him. "Uh no, why?"
"Just asking!" Jeff giggled. "Can I sit with you?"
Alex eyed him. Jeff was used to his little brother being the one to want to hang out with him, but with the tables turned, the boy seemed far less cordial. "Eh, go bother Kate. I'm supposed to be babysitting you two so leave me alone."
Jeff frowned, not expecting this response. Shrugging he went in search of Kate. He found her drawing with chalk outside
"Hi Kate!" He beamed.
She giggled and beamed back, "Hi Jeffy! Wanna draw with me?"
Kate didn't seem too different, after all he was still older than her and so she wanted to hang out more. Usually Kate was very clingy to him, but now she seemed more open and on equal footing.
"UHm, not just yet, I just wondered if you noticed anything weird."
"Weird? I dunno, just you acting weird why?" the six year old asked.
"No reason," Jeff beamed. "Ill see you!"
Jeff slipped back inside. This was great! He was the middle sibling now, the program had worked. The question was, what would he do now?
