While the class was trying to decide what wish they wanted, Ms. Chan leaned over and said in a low voice to Jeanie "Nice work."
"What do you mean?" asked Jeanie.
"Saying you'd grant the kids a 'minor' wish. Did you make a deal with Brenda for what kind of wish they'd ask for?"
"I made no 'deal,'" said Jeanie coldly, and with a little bit of menace Ms. Chan failed to notice.
"Right," said Ms. Chan. "So you've got another plant in the class?"
"Plant?"
"By the way, how did you work that first trick, where you seemed to come out of the lamp?"
"Trick!?" Jeanie was clearly getting angry, but Ms. Chan thought it was part of the act.
"I do have to say, you're a very good magician. The 'genie' bit is a nice touch."
"You mean she's just a magician?" asked a boy in the front row, who had heard what Ms. Chan had said.
"No!" said Jeanie. "I am a real genie!"
"Now, Jeanie," said Ms. Chan. "We all know that there are no such things as genies. They're made up, like fairies or dragons or ... "
"Children, would you like me to prove that I'm a genie?"
"Yes," shouted the class.
"Very well, then. Watch your teacher."
Ms. Chan started to chuckle as Jeanie stared intently at her.
