Sally discovered that she had exchanged a fear of harming others for a fear of being harmed by others. Knowing intimately the violence of violent men and living in a small woman's body meant a constant state of low-level fear, rising sometimes to panic when alone with men. Sally learned to avoid that although sometimes it was unavoidable, as in the confessional. She had few sexual feelings, and by dint of ignoring them they went away.
Sally's loneliness was not relieved by female friendships. Lacking socialization as a woman, she had little idea of how to establish friendships with other women, and generally came off as too reticent, too forward, or just too weird. After about a year she gave up.
She supported herself on the UBI which had become ubiquitous in her time and occasional jobs as part of an all-woman house cleaning crew. Much of her free time was spent in prayer, both for the victims of the men in her family and for the bearers of the Mark of Cain themselves. A favorite chapel was that maintained by the Sisters of Saint Chusdazat, a religious order founded shortly after the Vatican had authorized voluntary sexual modification in 2055 and purposed for persons born male who had given up manhood to become neuters or women--"Eunuchs for the Kingdom of God." (Saint Chusdazat was a eunuch martyr in the early church.)
In the third year after her transformation, she approached one of the sisters and asked about joining the order.
