Sherry at first didn't notice anything wrong, the Chronivac just displayed a progress bar slowly reaching 100% when she clicked the preset. She didn't actually read the preset, just clicked on one by chance.
She flipped back to solitaire, put on some music, and was playing as the Chronivac worked.
Meanwhile, downstairs, Bill was on his phone, checking in with work when the doorbell rang. He went to open it, and standing there was an android. It had a metal body that was an approximation of a human, and the face looked reasonably humanoid, but it was metallic, and gold in color. "What the...hell?"
"Malfunctioning Unit..." it said, "You must be repaired..."
"There's nothing malfunctioning about me...." he said, backing up.
It moved as fast as a human, and grabbed him by the arm. "I will repair you." It placed some sort of device on his head. Suddenly...he couldn't move. The device began to whir....and he felt a tingling in his mind.
"What is your designation?"
"Bill Martin."
"That is a poor designation. Going forward, you will be designated B1. Your software will be upgraded," the robot advised. It pressed some buttons on a controller linked to the device.
Bill's world exploded in a series of light and sound...it might have been painful....and he might have screamed out...but his memory of doing so wouldn't be retained.
Finally, he came to. "B1...ready to accept orders," he said, in a monotone.
"Recite basic operating parameters..." The robot insisted.
B1's mouth began to move on its own. "I may not injure a robot or, through inaction, allow a robot to come to harm. I must obey the orders given by robots."
