"Say Kriash?" I asked when the mermaid seemed to be available.
The fellow mermaid stared at me and I felt like I may have made a mistake when Kriash asked "What second question do you wish to ask of me?"
"Um?"
"Um?" Kriash repeated "Strange question... also hard to answer... quite a puzzle... trying to imagine what-"
"No, what I meant was... Do you have some way to make me human again?"
"Why?"
Not expecting the question I asked "Why?"
"Yes I'm asking why?"
"But I mean... I want to be human again."
"But now your magic, superhuman even, and have the ability to explore and create an entirely new frontier down here."
"I'm also trapped underwater away from my friends and family, or I can go up there and be miserable while inconveniencing all my friends and family in Landlocked New Mexico! I was a runner, never swam, and rarely went to a lake much less a sea! I practically drowned and either had to become a mermaid or die!" Kriash reached into the void again and plucked out a sheet of paper, a quill, and some ink. The wizard dipped the quill in some ink and then the most remarkable thing happened. The ink at first did what you'd think Ink would do underwater and dispersed through osmosis! Then magic happened and the ink went towards the page inking it thoroughly.
"I have not studied whether or not it's possible to turn back human fully... But I have made a charm or two. One for when I just want to dance on the shoreline for a minute or two." Kriash handed me the paper and on it was a sheet of music "I've found I was more musically gifted once turned into a merperson. If you sing it the melody should resonate with your internal magic. As long as you sing the melody your tail will turn into legs, and while your gills will go away your lungs should turn to that of a human." My eyes were on the sheet music and I understood how the melody should come out. Bubbles of hydrogen and oxygen escaped as my voice harmonized into the simple melody and for the first time I think I really felt magic. Not some simple tricks, but some way of tapping into creation itself... My tail turned back into legs and I smiled as my song continued until I took a breath and realized my lungs no longer tolerated water.
A few seconds later I heard Kriash chuckling as I blushed and yelled "Hey! It's not funny and I didn't feel like experience drowning two times in my life!"
"Then why'd you sing the little mermaid song underwater?" I knew I wasn't going to win this line of logic so I just swam out and towards a shoreline to practice.
