Finding the Tail

added 11 months ago O Mythological Aquatic

The box Monica just located was very odd for the family collection she had already gone over. It was actually more like a chest like those pirates either buried or dug-up filled with treasure but smaller, maybe about 2 feet tall and more narrow by a third of the usual. What’s more the wood was quite dark to almost being black while the metal bindings were of a sliver style. Even more strange was how untouched by cobwebs and dust this box was.

“Wonder what’s in here?” Monica pondered as she opened the box for it weirdly didn’t have a lock or if it did had been the only part affect by time about this box...

...But what Monica saw once the lid was off was what at first appeared to be a folded sheet of some sort of a silvery colour and fish-scale pattern. But when Monica took hold and pulled it out she found it was no sheet but a swimmable mermaid’s tail costume “Why would something like this be in here?” Monica questioned as she gave the find a look over.

The tail that Monica had pulled out wasn’t the typical waist-high one but instead went all the way up to the bust-line when worn but had no zippers though as Monica found while examining it that was because the material was rather stretchable, yet resilient enough not to tear. The mono fin at the bottom looked standard but checking the slots for the feet inside showed it to be designed only for the user’s feet pointing downward as opposed to adjusting alongside the actual fin itself being a attached part of the costume while also being designed as transparent beyond the ‘scales’ and feet. A very different kind of fin Monica also found travelled down the back of the costume along where one’s spine would be.

Looking back into the check revealed the costume wasn’t a single piece as well. Monica also found a pair of elbow length gloves designed to match the tail, complete with similar yet smaller fins like the one on the tail’s back attached to the forearms. Fingers of the gloves were individual digits but the same material as the transparent parts of the fins was attached between each finger leaving the thumbs as the only independent part, at least in terms of design as the transparent ‘webbing’ was just as stretchable.

“OK just what the hell were mum and dad doing with something like this?” Monica pondered before noticing there had been this wired gray-covered book at the bottom of the chest. One saying on a corner to have been made during the 1850s but that couldn’t be right as the book looked almost untouched like the tail and as far as she knew the first swimmable mermaid tail costume wasn’t made until 1911 “OK this is getting just to wired? Their needs to be an answer here?” Monica pondered as she re-examined her wired find:
