Amara made her way to Nat's house as a human before the sun began to set. She grumbled underneath her breath at what had happened earlier in the day, she had not only met the son of a vampire hunter, but also a fairy, a damphir, and apparently a wizard. She went up to the door and knocked on the door and Nat's beautiful mother, Marisa opened the door confused to see the young girl before her.
"Um, can I help you?" Marisa MacGregor asked.
"Hi, my name's Amara Szymanski, and I'm here kind of on my 'parole'." Amara explained to her best ability.
"What?" Mrs. MacGregor asked still confused. Nat then came from behind her mom and stepped beside Amara.
"So mom, here's the long-short of it. That cat that I brought home was actually a mara and this is her in human form. She was giving me and my friend Spark nightmares and we decided to get back at her by putting her on 'parole' as it were. By day she's human, by night a cat." Nat explained as her mother listened.
"Wait, so you're a mara named Amara? That's a little too on the nose." Mrs. MacGregor said.
"Oh come on, I thought it sounded like a good name. How long do I have to be in this stupid collar for anyway?" Amara asked Nat.
"Until you decide to not give me or my friends bad dreams anymore." Nat said.
"Fat chance, you and that Asian brat probably only know some lame magic tricks anyway." Amara said rolling her eyes as Nat's eyes twitched and she took a deep breath keeping from screaming.
Nat carefully looked around her neighborhood until she saw her neighbor across the street, a mid-thirties obese woman who was forcing her 10 year-old son to take out the trash.
"Come on, lift with your knees, you little shit." The woman said to her son as the son barely was able to put the trash into the can and it broke slightly. "God damn it, you little brat." The woman said as she smacked her son.
"Do you see that woman and son over there?" Nat asked as Amara nodded.
Nat used her magic and transformed the woman into a lovely looking woman straight out of the 1950s while her son grew up to be a lovely man with a pipe in his hand.
"Oh good heavens dear. Did a bee sting you?" The woman asked concerned now for her husband.
"Possibly dear, but I'll be fine. Come now, let's go inside, it'll be time for dinner soon." The husband said as they headed inside.
Amara now looked over at Nat who was smiling at her.
"Now, I did those people a favor, but just remember, I could easily change you like that and you'd never know it. So you listen to me and don't insult my girlfriend again. Got it?" Nat said showing her teeth and her eyes glowed slightly as Amara nodded and all of them went into the house.
Amara noticed a shelf full of supernatural books.
"Wait a minute...MacGregor? You're the author of these books?" Amara said asking Mrs. MacGregor.
"Guilty as charged, I've been writing these for years. People ask me where I get inspiration from and I guess I can tell you that it's mainly from the life I've seen. But a magic cat, now that could be a story on it's own. I've got to go make a few notes." Mrs. MacGregor said as she left her daughter and Amara alone.
"So you read my mom's books?" Nat asked.
"Yeah, I'm surprised how much material was actually pretty accurate, with a few discrepancies, but now I know the reason why. Anyway, it looks like the sun's starting to set." Amara said as she put the book she'd been holding back on the shelf and now began to transform into her cat form.
"Aw, don't you look just 'purfect'." Nat joked.
"Ha, ha, I've never heard that one before." Amara said sarcastically.
"Just remember if you give me, Spark, or any of us bad dreams, you'll have bad dreams just the same. Or maybe you'll experience the dreams with us, I'm not really up on dream logic." Nat said.
