They were tricky sellers for sure and the infinite return and refund policy attached did at times mean many would and could be returned. Then again finding people willing to be genies for these lamps whenever one wants to use their powers would be the biggest factor and was based on the owner, whether originally brought or inherited somehow.
And indeed that’s what these lamps did but not in ways one usually thinks of when thinking of genies.
See while these lamps had the power to grant wishes to do so requires a ‘host’, a person, to channel the powers by linking them to the lamp. When one is not currently hosting someone, a rub will instead produce a type of outfit accosted with genies. Differs with each calling bat always included were bracelets lockable with a key always attached to the lamp (And protected to prevent loss or destruction by the lamp’s powers). If rubbed again without someone wearing the outfit the lamp simple recalls it...
...but if one wears the entire outfit while allowing the bracelets to be locked on then instead when rubbed they will become the genie and be pulled into the lamp. To be restored is to simply unlock the bracelets while the host is outside. Of course the outfit that comes out is often based on the rubber and having someone of the opposite sex wear the resulting outfit... well the emotional outcome varies but their sex will change to accommodate the outfit until restored to human.
Now as a genie with a fully functional human mind channelling the power you can if desire alter wishes to an extent but attempts to refuse can curse issues... most common being unable to revert until you do so or the current master recants or dies. Also one isn’t immortal and still ages as a human which in case of death also acts the same as the bracelets coming off normally (Besides the obvious reasons) and if inside the lamp at the time then their body is ejected.
And of course there are other restrictions owners need to be aware of with wishes:
1: Obviously wishing to have a genie kill someone with their powers will not work
2: No wishing for more wishes, though tactically this is over wishes being indefinitely naturally
3: Opposite to the above in that one cannot wish to have wishes limited
4: no one can wish to make a host a permanent genie, those that try to bypass the key’s defences be warned!
5: Masters cannot wish be become normal genies using host genies
6: Depending on the wish, the effects might be reverted once a host returns to normal human (Though this means there are wishes that remain)
All that aside though even though most lamps are returned eventually they and those not all have stories and adventures to tell:
