To say that Spark was angry would be an understatement. While Connors intentions may have been pure, his wording missed the mark completely.
The last couple of days had been awkward, a fact everyone noticed as they now sat in Ms. McKinnons class. "Now everyone," Mary Elise stated. "Please be careful with these chemicals. They can irritate the skin."
"I can't use them Ms. McKinnon," Spark exclaimed. "Its just too dangerous. Maybe I should head home. Right Connor?" Mary Elise and the others now cast the couple an odd look as Connor slumped down in his seat. Spark was going out of her way to express her anger.
Heading home, the couple now walked in silence. Spark was still enraged by Connors request, to the point that she didn't even want him opening the door for her. Stomping inside the fairy now turned to glare at Connor before shrinking down into fairy form. The tiny green figure now glared at him, her amber eyes almost burning a hole through him as her wings beat furiously. "I need to blow off some steam," she snorted as she hovered in mid air. "I'll be in my room playing games or is that too dangerous Connor Moreland!" Connor simply groaned, trudging his way towards his bedroom.
Collapsing on his bed, the teen buried his face in his pillow. Spark, and girls could be weird sometimes. As he now pondered what to do, he heard his cellphone ring. "Hello," he grumbled.
"Hey Connor," Caleb said. "How's everything?"
"Caleb hi," Connor said happily. It had been too long since he had heard from his brother. "Hows everything? Can't wait to see you on Thanksgiving."
Caleb thanked his brother, the two siblings exchanging small talk. After a moment though Caleb asked a question that immediately soured his mood. "So I got a text message from Spark. Any reason she wants to come to college?"
Connor groaned, the teen pinching the bridge of his nose as he now told his brother about the fight. "I was just worried about her," he moaned. "I mean this guy Kane has already attacked people we know and who knows how many others he's killed. I just....I just want her to be safe."
"Connor," Caleb sighed. A silence now lingered between the brothers as Caleb searched for words. "You know thinking like that is just buying into traditional gender roles and supporting the patriarchy."
"Huh?"
"Sorry," Caleb apologized. "Gloria convinced me to enroll in a gender studies class."
"How is it?"
"Awful," Caleb chuckled. "I mean its seriously awful. I want to drop it but its the only class me and Gloria share. Do you have any idea how much it sucks to be sitting in a class and have every girl in there glare at you like your Satan himself! I can't wait to be done with it."
Connor chuckled, the laughter between the brothers defusing the tension and improving his mood. "Seriously though," Caleb continued. "Spark is more than capable of taking care of herself. She's been fighting demons longer than either one of us. Plus she has magic AND is a trained fighter. I'm pretty sure she fights better than you."
"Thanks," Connor grumbled.
"Look I'm just saying," Caleb said softly. "At the end of the day you and me are just regular humans. Yeah, we've been training to fight since we were old enough to walk but Spark has way more going for her. Apologize to her and tell her whats bugging you."
"Okay," Connor sighed. "Thanks Caleb, I miss you."
"Miss you too Connor," Caleb said. "Can't wait to see you. Looking forward to beating you and your friends in our annual backyard football game."
"We'll see about that Caleb," Connor grinned. "Tell Gloria I said hi. I'll talk to you soon. And...thanks."
"No problem little brother," Caleb said happily. With that the brothers hung up the phone, Connor taking a deep breath. He had some apologizing to do, hopefully Spark would be receptive without him having to grovel too much.
