There exists a small town in south-eastern Texas called BlueHaven. It is a peaceful town full of peaceful people, with an overall occupation of 1,279 people. Its streets are bustling with color and joy, and its people are some of the nicest you’ll meet.
A few months ago, BlueHaven did not exist.
BlueHaven’s true name is unknown, but those who are aware of the existence of the town call it “The Town of Mist”, or, for the sake of this author’s not wanting to refer to it as “The Town of Mist”, some call it “Mistveil”.
To put it simply, Mistveil is constantly shifting. What, you may ask, does that mean? Well, to start, Mistveil is in a constant state of, as the name implies, Mist. Researchers have discovered a direct correlation between the expansion of the mist due to the growth of the town’s population. The mist has a strange magical property, almost chaotic. Whatever or whoever makes direct contact with the mist will experience changes in their lives. By this, of course, we mean that their families, friends, occupations, ages, and entire lives are constantly changing. People have ended up in completely different situations and places in the town without even knowing, as there is somehow a shift in reality for every change.
What is also very strange is that not only do the individuals in the town change, but the town itself is constantly shifting from direct exposure to the mist. Roads shift, buildings change, a park becomes a junkyard and a mansion becomes an Asylum.
There are many rules to the mist, and they are as follows:
- If you come into direct contact with the mist, something about you will change.
- This change varies based on who or what is changing, what are the circumstances around the change, and who or what is around the changing individual. (For example, someone might make contact with the mist, enter a supermarket, and end up as one of the employees).
-Changes happen slowly over an hour or two.
- Sometime a human will turn into and animal and an animal will turn into a human or a different species of animal. Species changes, however, are very rare.
-Changes to one person may also affect someone else, like if a mother turns into a baby, her children and husband will change to fix reality.
-Massive group changes are possible.
-Once you change, you cannot change again for a full three days.
-Passing though the mist in a vehicle will cause the vehicle to change, but will leave the person inside unchanged, unless a door or window is open.
-The mist cannot enter a building, but it can effect a building.
-If the mist is at full intensity, the changes will be more intense. Usually such days cause the entire town to change shape.
Those who are aware of Mistveil’s existence have spent their entire lives studying it and trying to find ways to prevent the mist from taking over the world. They surmised that it may be possible to reduce the size of the mist by reducing the population of the town. Unfortunately, in order for that to happen, there would have to be someone on the inside to oversee the evacuation, which would be impossible.
What the researchers don’t know is that there are a very rare, select number of people that carry a gene that somehow prevents permanent mind alteration from the mist. If only there was someone with the gene who could enter Mistveil, endure the mist’s effects without going insane, and successfully evacuate the whole town before the mist grows too large and eventually takes over another town or even a full city. That would make for a pretty badass story. Where, prey tell, or whom would be the carrier of this gene?
