The Magic Shop

A Sisterly Debt

A good part of Selena wanted to let Luna flap in the wind. After all, Luna was the one thoughtless enough to get her body hair lasered off. While that might appeal to most humans, werewolves took pride in their human form's body hair. It was just as reckless as Luna getting a bad tattoo. And Selena had good reason to not feel pity towards her older sister, who had bullied her pretty much all her life.

However, Selena couldn't turn her back on family like this. Luna was right about blood looking out for blood. But a more pragmatic part of Selena could think of another reason to help Luna. It would be very useful to have Luna in her debt, especially with their mother sniffing around for werehyenas.

"Well, if you must know, I bought some magic caramels from Morgana," said Selena, "I've got one bag that makes you grow hair and another bag that removes it. I think the magic should undo what the lasers have done."

Luna gave a sigh of relief and said, "Thank Mother Night. Selena, you're a lifesaver."

"It's not Mother Night you should be thanking, it's me," said Selena, "And since I am saving your life, you owe me big time."

Luna frowned and said, "It's just an expression. You're only helping me regrow hair. It's not like you're literally saving my life."

"Aren't I?" asked Selena, "You know how Mom would react to this?" She gestured as Selena's hairless body.

"She wouldn't react that badly," said Luna. She paused and looked doubtful, "Would she?"

It might be an exaggeration on Selena's part. If she wanted to trust Luna with her secrets, it would have to be because Luna owes her really big. But then, it might not be too far from the truth. "You know how unstable Mom has been lately," said Selena, "Dad had a pretty good reason for busting her down."

"Yeah, but she wouldn't really kill me just for removing my body hair," said Luna, looking more uncertain.

"Luna, she manhandled me just for defying her. She's starting to stir up a war against the vampires. You think she wouldn't overreact to your beauty treatment in her current state of mind?" asked Selena.

"That's different. It was because you're dating a le... lesbian vampire," said Luna.

"So what if I am?" asked Selena, "You're just as much of a lesbian as I am."

"But I'm dating within the pack," said Luna, "Mom doesn't have a problem with Lucy."

"But she does have a problem with us dating girls," said Selena, "There are a lot less cubs in the pack now and less girls interested in guys. Mom thinks the vampires are trying to breed us out and she's wanting to go to war for that."

"How would you know?" asked Luna.

"Isn't it obvious?" asked Selena, "She's not exactly keeping quiet about her opinions either. So I wouldn't risk her finding out about your hair in her current state."

"Ok, ok, you've made your point," said Luna, "I'm owing you big time. Satisfied?"

"Almost," said Selena, "I want you to make a vow to Mother Night as well."

"Is that really necessary?" asked Luna in exasperation.

"Yes," said Selena, "Otherwise, you can find someone else to help you get your hair back."

Luna growled with frustration. But she sighed and said, "I swear by Mother Night that I, Luna Lyall, am in your life-debt until I have saved your life or am otherwise released from it. There, you want me to sign in blood as well?"

"That should do," said Selena, "And I am keeping you to your word."

"Do you actually have the magic caramels or are you just yanking my chain?' asked Luna flatly.

Selena went to her backpack and pulled out the bag of hair chews. She picked out three caramels and held out her hand. "This should be enough to get you properly hairy."

Luna took the caramels, unwrapped them, and ate them. From a scientific point of view, what she wanted should be impossible. The hair follicles were burnt away and shouldn't be able to grow back. But magic laughs in the face of science. It did start a bit slower for Luna than the other girls. First, stubble appeared over her body as the magic was rebuilding her follicles. But then fine hair started growing out, becoming thicker until Luna had a decent coat again.

Luna sighed with relief and said, "That's better. It's gonna be a pain to shave the regular way though." Selena gave her a flat look. "I'm joking," said Luna.

"Probably should still shave and let it regrow," said Selena, "Considering Mom right now, any sign of magic could be seen as consorting with the enemy."

"I guess so," said Luna, "Anyways, I'm a wolf of her word. I'm in your debt now."

That was good for Selana, but she wondered how much she could trust her sister. Even with that vow, would Luna immediately rat her out to Artemis if she found out her sister is forming a werehyena pack? Could she count on Luna to stand for her to their mother if a confrontation happens? Maybe she should just give Selena part of the truth about the werehyenas, not naming any names.

What should Selena tell Luna?
