I feel that I should not write this down, that the device is not supposed to exist in our world. Yet, I would loathe even more the possibility that all knowledge of it could be lost forever.
My mind says I should throw the damned thing in the ocean, where it will never be found – but I could never bear to do that.
It is a beautiful amulet. Ancient, perhaps a thousand years old. Circular and made from pure silver with fine gold worked into ornate, decorative lines around its edges. On one side, the symbol of a cat’s paw is embedded in rubies, shining a deep red. On the other side, the symbol of a dog’s paw, made from the sapphires embedded within that create a cold, exquisite blue. Humanity’s two best friends…
The inside of the amulet can be rotated left or right.
I was foolish enough to use it, thinking it no more than a trinket. It was much, much more than that. Magic, I can only describe it thus, resides within the amulet. It is magic that was a bane to my existence for seven long years. Four years lost to the form of a dog because I was so infinitely stupid as to activate the trigger. Through trial and error I found its workings - after spending three additional birthdays as a pet cat to a spoilt, rich urban family. It was a miracle that the amulet remained hidden in all my days as an animal.
If you are foolish enough to use the device, I will offer my instructions on its use.
The amulet is designed to transform the body of a single person, or perhaps more people if the trigger was activated repeatedly, into either a cat or dog for a set amount of time. A small gold arrow points to the timespan one wishes to spend in the animal’s body as if it were a clock. When the paw is completely upright (where both gold arrows meet), representing twelve on a clock, there will be no effect. Just a millimeter on the right hand side (12:01) would represent only a day spent as a beast, while a millimeter to the left (11:59) would represent a nightmarish five years. ABSOLUTE CARE MUST BE TAKEN WHEN SETTING THE TIMESPAN!
After setting the timespan (or having it set beforehand), one must put the amulet on their chest until they feel a slight burning sensation. If one places the cat paw directly on their skin, then they become a cat, and if one places the dog paw on their skin, a dog. Once the burning sensation has occurred, the spell is unstoppable. YOU WILL NOT CHANGE BACK UNTIL THE TIME HAS PASSED! I am fairly certain that the type of dog or cat you become is the same breed as the most recent one you’ve seen. So, if the last dog you witnessed was a Labrador, you are likely to become one yourself after using the medallion.
The transformation takes approximately half an hour and is very uncomfortable in the late stages. Once transformed, you will have no ability to speak in a human voice. After some days, instincts will appear, and it will become easy to slip into the animal’s mental state for hours at a time. I know this from personal experience.
I have set the timer to midnight to make sure a person cannot activate it, except by a very unlucky accident, without first reading this note.
