A large plume of dust exploded into William's face as he dropped an old chest onto the floor with a clunk. He sneezed for maybey the hundreth time in a few hours and pulled it open, rifleing through it's contents. He had been up in his parent's attic for the last three hours, cleaning it out and taking anything interesting or useful. He closed the chest and turned to the last box in the attic. It was a small wooden box, almost like a jewelry box, and it was incredibly old.
When he opened it, he found only two objects: a note and an amulet. William, always one for knowledge, grabbed the thin document and read it in it's entirety. "Interesting." He mumbled to himself as he returned his attention to the amulet in the box. He pulled a hankercheif out of his pocket and used it to pick up the amulet. "I guess caution must be used." He shoved it in his pocket and went downstairs to his room.
William sat at his desk and reread the note several times. It didn't sound possible, but these were not the scribbilings of a crazed lunatic. He was pretty sure that whoever wrote it ages back was completely sane and composed. So he would just have to take the man's word for it as he knew nothing about what now sat before him. "So," William pondered, "If I turn the arrows one millimeter to the right it will be one day. But, if I turn the arrows one millimeter to the left, it will be five years. Logically speaking, if I turn the arrows to the right seven millimeters, it should last for one week."
His mind made up, William wrote a note, addressed to his parents, saying that he was going to be gone for a week. He had already left a note like this before and had no doubt that they would not worry. He grabbed a watertight bag, for his clothes, The amulet, And letter, and went into the woods behind his house. After he was sure he would not be seen, he stripped and put his clothes in the bag with the letter. He then carefully turned the arrows on the amulet exactly seven millimeters to the right before pressing the dog paw side to his chest.
He waited several moments as he felt the cold metal on his skin and then felt the burning sensation that the letter had described. He quickly placed the amulet in the back with his other thing and hid it amongst the roots of a tree. He knew he had seen a dog earlier that day, so what had it been?
