"I want to spin gold instead of silver. That's better, right?" Claire prodded.
"Okay...well, how about this?" Jennifer said after thinking about it. "I'll transform you to grow a second spinner that produces gold silk. That way you can keep your silver spinner and get even more money. And this will all be considered as nothing new by anybody but the two of us."
Claire could feel it in her abdomen. It bulged slightly, contents shifting and dividing to make room for a new organ to produce the gold silk. The silver spinner shifted over to the left as a new point formed on the right opposite it. Her abdomen now looked like a V formed by two giant footballs. As she worked the muscles and glands, she watched gold and silver strands shoot out of each tip.
She was so caught up in their dazzling shine, Claire cavorted about the room, lining parts of the walls with colorful webs that sparkled in the dim light. Then she wondered, did she ever spin the real stuff? The super sticky spider web stuff?
She concentrated, and suddenly out of both spinners at once came white streams of thread. They latched onto a nearby web and dangled lightly. They were slightly thicker than her silk, and when she touched one with her finger it stuck fast. It took a bit of wrangling to remove it. Once she did, she returned to the phone."
"Look," Jennifer said, indignantly. "If you're just going to keep running away I'll drive over there."
"Fine with me," Claire said. "We can have the most bizarre sleep-over of all time."
"That's it," Jennifer snorted. With twenty feet of wool dangling from her body, she did not want to fool around any longer. "I dare you to say 'Transform or Dare' to me right now."
"Transform or Dare, Jennifer?" Claire said automatically.
"Great," Jennifer said. "Now get this stuff off me and make it grow at a slower pace. But not as slow as normal, obviously. That was the whole point of this deal. We'll both get to earn tons of money now."
Despite the fortune Jennifer had bestowed upon Claire tonight, it was obvious that Jennifer cared about herself first and foremost. Claire knew that if Jennifer didn't have something to gain herself, she wouldn't have even thought of giving Claire this opportunity.
"Well, miss righteous," Claire said. "Since you haven't actually said 'Transform' yet, that means you haven't picked. And the minute deadline just passed. So, here's what we'll do..."
