You find yourself at the business end of a long axe held by a glaring dwarf. You had rarely seen dwarves before, but your father had never been stingy with his own knowledge. Seeing the beard neatly weaved into two braids and the slight curve of the armor, you come to a realization.
"I'm--I'm a scout!" you finally stammer out the explanation you had practiced should you encounter any strangers that were not demons. "I've been hired to see if there's any strange demon activity in the area!"
"Prove it!" the dwarf snaps, staring at you suspiciously and not lowering the weapon.
"Leave her be, Birku," another voice rings out, and a rugged-looking human steps into view. "Sorry about that, she means no harm," the man addresses you.
"Orc's blood, Rish! For all you know she's a demon spy!" the female dwarf grumbles, but lowers her weapon.
"She has no horns and her ears are round, she's human all right," Rish replies, then turns to you again. "It's not safe out here, I know you're doing a job, but I'd turn back if I were you, demons cross these lands all the time."
"I can't do that..." you respond haltingly, trying not to fidget under Birku's sharp gaze. While Rish's eyes are softer, they are no less scrutinizing. Finally, Rish sighs.
"Well, we're meeting up with some demon hunters a couple of leagues from here. Why don't you join us for now? It'd be safer to travel in numbers," Rish offers, much to your surprise.
"Rish!" Birku snaps, but stifles her objection under Rish's smile.
You, on the other hand, have no idea how to respond to Rish's offer. While you are in a dangerous area, it would be much more dangerous if these two were to discover your secret. However, all you had to do was hide in your tent at night, or sneak off on your own in the dark for a few nights. You didn't necessarily have to stay with them until they join with the demon hunters. But the demon hunters might have valuable information on the area. Either way, it was a risk.
