With the store closed Maria ended up taking the baby girl, Dani was her name according to Lacey, to the police station. There she handed Dani over to a female constable and explained how she had found Dani with Lacey at the entrance to the department store and a brief recap on what Lacey had told her. "Lacey found the little girl in the toy department but then took her to the baby department as she needed a nappy change. They then must have got lost and found themselves locked out of the store after closing time. I came across the two of them at the rear door, but even the front door was closed. There was no sign of the girls mother, that's why I came here"
The constable wrote all this down "You did the right thing Mrs Jones. We'll put out a bulletin, no doubt the childs mother is frantically searching for her. Not that we have any notification of anyone reporting a lost child. Just add your details to the bottom of this page. I'll contact you once we have a happy conclusion"
Maria left, Lacey in hand. The little girl turned and waved "Bye-bye" to Dani.
Dani had lost the power of speech. All she could do was scream as Lacey and her chances of being restored walked away.
The constable immediately put out an all points bulletin explaining about a lost child "An infant girl. About 12 to 15 months. Possibly goes by the name of Dani"
Dani continued to scream in the background
"There there little one. Don't cry. No doubt you are hungry. We'll find your mummy soon. I'll see if we have anything in the staff room you can munch on"
